How and What to check on your DD214 when medically separating?

Hello, I will soon be medically separating out of the Navy.

People have told me and I've also read about horror stories of having a DD214 error and problems when receiving VA benefits among other issues.

So before I get my DD214, I want to verify EXACTLY what to look for (codes, which boxes, etc.) and upon receipt of the DD214, what I should do with it? (how many certified copies to make from where, whether or not to hand over the original to the VA case manager for IDES process)
I don't know why but I've heard VA case manager located in NMCSD is asking for the "original copy" and I was told never to give up your original.

Thanks for all the info, and ASAP replies would be greatly appreciated!

I don't have ALL the answers - just one - which happened to me and I had to wait three days for them to correct my DD-214 while out-processing.

Make sure they have your initial date of entrance to military service correct. Mine wasn't and it would have affected how much my retirement was calculated on.

They had my initial date AFTER 08 SEP 1980 - which would have put me under the "high 36" calculation. In reality, I had a date PRIOR to that - and my retirement would have been calculated under the "Final Pay" system.

So make sure they get that date correct on you DD214. I had to go up to the chief of the whole out-processing department, show him my documents, and he had to approve the change so the DD214 clerk could have the authority to change it.

That's all I can add on this.

ANY OTHERS HAVE MORE INFOR ON THE DD214 ISSUES?

I have heard you should have a new ERB on hand to verify awards and things like that too... I'd suggest to have your I Love Me Book too just for giggles...

Ok so other than initial date of entry into the military, what else should I check in regards to not having errors during receiving VA benefits?

C'mon this has got to be important for almost everyone going through med board!

Any more info from anyone?

I think it is important to everyone, but it's almost the common sense factor that might be keeping people from posting. You need to make sure it acturately displays your time in service. Everything from the awards you earned, times you deployed, your military and civilian education, etc. It's one sheet of paper that represents you and only you. It should match your ERB/ORB and if doesn't, you have very little time to make it match by producing the documents. I had a poorly completed DD 214 when I went from enlisted to Warrant, but I was in candidate school and did not have access to any of my documents at the time. I wasn't too worried about it at the time, because I knew when I left the service as a Warrant, my DD 214 would be corrected. I kept my ORB up to date at all times over the past 11 years, and so far my DD 214 worksheet is flawless, minus my ETS award and my final Overseas Service Ribbon not being present, but this will all be corrected once I do my Final Out next week.
