After my VA exam, I recieved the results from the psychiatrist, and she rated me as having an adjustment disorder, with depression, and anxiety... Linked to my injury that put me in my MEB. She gave me a gaf score of 58.

I've heard several things about adjustment disorders, and how they rate them. With a gaf score of a 58 linked to an unfitting injury does anyone know what the percentage might look like for this adjustment disorder?

GAF is only part of it though. It also depends on how it impairs your functioning. Look at the VASRD schedule of ratings for mental health.

My GAF was a 55 with my diagnosis affecting most things memory, daily task, etc Im still waiting on VA for ratings as soon as I find out I'll let you know.

Remember, the GAF is not the whole equation, but will come into play. The raters are going to look at the effects on daily life via the notes the Dr wrote. It's funny that a Dr who see's you for less than an hour can make an accurate diagnosis.

Anyway, my GAF was 67 and I was rated for adjustment disorder with moderate depression and my rating came back at 30%

Adjustment disorder was one of my prior diagnoses, but the VA contractor wrote "no diagnosis" and told me to follow up with my Dr. for ADHD Inattention Type. He said adults can have second and third order effects from having a lifelong undiagnosed case of ADHD, and the Adjustment Disorder with Mixed Anxiety and Depressed Mood I was previously diagnosed with is exactly that. After waiting months for an appointment, I finally got the results of the psych test and the Dr. confirmed that the VA contractor was exactly right, however I still have Adjustment Disorder. Having that diagnosis on my 199 would probably take my rating above the 20%, but at this point I am not prepared to rot here on Fort Bragg in the WTB any longer than I have to. It's time to leave, and besides, I could use that Severance Pay!

I have decided to not to fight the Army PEB on this one and just claim it through the VA on my exit interview. It's probably worth a higher rating than what I already have for my Type-1 Diabetes.

I am curious what the GAF score is, and how I can figure out what mine is. I did just take a number of very long bubble-in tests. Maybe it's in there somewhere.

It's in the summary that the BH Dr wrote from your VA exam. You should have gotten a copy of all your VA exam documents when you picked up your NARSUM

MaParker,

Yes, I'm currently going through an MEB as we speek. I started it in early July, 2012 and the packet finally got sent out about a month ago. My EAOS just expired last month, and I am on a medical hold until results are back. It was my choice, I would rather wait past my EAOS a few months and make sure everything was taking care of correctly, while I still collect a paycheck every two weeks. I have two more questions for you guys, if you dont mind.

Is there an easier way of tracking the MEB process, other than checking your Ebenefits page regularly?

My NARSUM was written before my psych. evaluation, my Peblo attached the results in the form of an addendum. Is that normal procedure?

Thanks again.

See enclosure 5 of DoDI 1332.38. Adjustment disorder is a non compensable condition by the military. That being said, the military will often diagnose a mental health condition as adjustment disorder to avoid paying benefits.

Tomcat,

I had a GAF score of 58 from the VA and they rated me 30%. They are suppose to use the VA guidelines for GAF score, but it is really up to the raters discression.

The results from my exam are:

AXIS I: 309.28 Adjustment Disorder, Depression Anxiety
AXIS II: V71.09 No Diagnosis
AXIS III: See Appropriate Medical Professional: Eye Injury
AXIS IV: Psychosocial Treatment: Stressors that may impact the diagnosis, prognosis and Medical, Pending Military Discharge, Employment
AXIS V: GAF= 58 (current) Moderate Symptoms and Impairment

At this time his Adjustment Disorder is described as imposing occupational and social impairment with periods of inability to perform tasks although generally functioning satisfactorily. Symptoms incluse depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and chronic sleep impairment.

Kiefer,

Yea, I just looked at the VARSD and my results were almost identical to how they rate adjustment disorders at 30%. Did the DOD rate you or just the VA? (For the adjustment disorder)

The DOD did not rate my PTSD. They found me unfit for my Crohns Disease, but the VA gave me the 30%.
