For many members, the VA will end up paying more in total compensation. In those cases, you would waive the VA compensation. In some cases, the DoD retirement will be more. Since you don't qualify for CRDP or CRSC, you will want to compare which is higher. Since your VA compensation is non-taxable, you will likely elect to waive your DoD compensation. But if your DoD is more, you would waive only a partial amount up to the amount of VA compensation (which would mean you get that much non-taxable plus the remainder of your DoD compensation, which would be taxed).
