Marine Corps My boyfriend is questioning surgery

So when my boyfriend got out of bootcamp they told him he had a stress fracture on his right foot. He got his 10 day leave was home and on his foot the whole time. The Dr. put him on crutches for one week (??) and since then he has been on his foot the entire time. Recently they took an MRI of his left knee and found some ligaments or tendons or something messed up. They are saying he needs surgery. My man has wanted to be a Marine since he could breathe but the problem is, he is absolutely miserable where he is at now and cant imagine trying to have a a surgery and rehab here for the next 9-12 months. He is seeing guys have surgery and get more messed up than they were before they started. Does anyone have any information that may help him make a decision. He cant get answers from anyone on base.

I'm sorry to reply so long after this question was asked, but I had surgery for a torn MCL, and I think the fact that I the large amount of time (5 months) spent between the injury and the surgery really contributed to it not healing very well afterward. 9-12 months of surgery and rehab may seem like a pain now, but weigh that against the trouble he may have for the rest of his life if his injuries aren't taken care of. Mine didn't heal nearly as well as I had hoped it would, but it is definitely better than before the surgery and therapy.

There are some threads around here started about people who had broken their foot/feet. I would recommend digging through them (Used to be Army Strong had several on the topic, I believe) and seeing how those turned out.

He needs to take care of his injuries as soon as possible. I had a tiny stress fracture in my femur. I was in Kuwait for OIF and the doctor thought I just pulled a muscle in the gym and let me keep going until I completely broke my leg just from walking....compound femur fracture. Worst pain in my life!!! I had to be medevac'd to Germany for emergency surgery and leave my Company without saying goodbye. It was a very tramatic expirience for me and this was my first deployment. I didnt want to come home this way. Now Im on medhold going on 9 months post surgery rehabbing. It sucks! On top of all this my future in the Navy is uncertain and I will probably never be able to run again. Im a female and my health and fitness is very important to me. I ran three miles a day at the gym in Kuwait. Your boyfriend needs to suck it up and take care of himself regardless if he likes where he is or not. It could be worse. Good luck to you.
