We need a up to date reference on RETENTION OF MILITARY TECHNICIANS WHO LOSE DUAL STATUS. I myself have been given a option to go thru the IDES. The military side AFI’s for medical retention will most likely end my military career. Although I’m capable of doing my technician job. It is my understanding that I will loose my technician job also. Any advice on this would really be appreciated. Also I have not served in combat just a combat zone. I have seen a lot of guys medical retire because of this rule. If it is possible for a technician to stay without being in the military. Please show me in writing.

If you contract for the position state that you must be in dual status, then your contract will not be renewed if you are discharged from the Air Force.

It depends how you were hired on. For me, on the Air National guard Technician side - acceptance of my technician job is dependent on my military membership.
So if/when I’m medically retired through the military for something that happened on Title 10, i’ll Complete that process first, and after that the technician disability retirement will start it’s process due to my lack of military.
Depending on your circumstances, the follow on technician process can take another 2-3 months of not wearing the uniform or doing drills. I’m speaking from observed timelines, I’m not in that timeline yet. My package has left the NGB, and I’m not sure what my next step militarily is.

Have you started your VA disability paperwork/process yet? As long as you have medical documentation (civilian or military), you can get that ball rolling ahead of time to speed things up down the road.

I have been serviced connected since 2011. I also have a waiver For my service connected ratings. The waiver has ended. So I have been asked if I want to do the IDES. Or try for another waiver. I hit my twenty year mark in FEBRUARY. This will be my second MEB. I also have LOD’s for some of my service connected ratings.
I have discussed the waiver but it’s not a guarantee.

I found a thread on this issue. Although it is a little old. I will do some research and try to find a up to date answer. I will try to get with my HR department and get some answers.

I would do IDES, it will not be done by Feb. and if you get >50% disability its a win/win, especially if you account for the civilian disability retirement.
