ALL- as stated
having severe issue's not only this website but internet as well- oddly another veteran I know this local area having same various other web-sites as well and also supposedly "worked with indeginious forces all over the world," more so than I....supposedly.
That being stated "they" asked me to post a Amazon.com review they simply cannot get posted- as IAW them had numerous issues with this- when none in past, and I think relevant as "highlights" not only skill-set's veterans possess, but the US Government expense of "education and training" poured into them and can "SHARE" AT Large in "civilian" work force- (Also tired of contacting Amazon.com Corporate Leadership at
[email protected] about these issues and others!)
So here goes as requested:
There is no better way to demonstrate the “Military Decision-Making Process” (MDMP) to those whom have never lived, slept, breathed and eaten it 24/7 in both it in both peace-time training and combat both for higher “Commanding Officer’s” and to execute one’s own mission’s, than through history! “The Sustainment Battle Staff & Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) Guide” Paperback – July 15, 2015 by COL (Ret), Dr. John M. Menter (Author) (at Amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0692387366/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Bought both “hard-copy” and kindle” version this book) is a very good “work” and I have utilized similar items as memory “jogger’s” when “dead” tired and/or as “pilots” do a “checklist” to ensure nothing is “overlooked!” Unlike, the “Ranger Handbook” – at Amazon.com-
https://www.amazon.com/Ranger-Handb...id=1531993488&sr=1-1&keywords=ranger+handbook , the MDMP is much more highly complex and involved the :higher” the level of operation- i.e. tactical-theater-strategic, which I believe many overlook! The Ranger Handbook was in fact “translated” into Arabic by US SOF forces in Iraq, but many Iraqi’s did not “grasp” the concepts “there-in” only a very few did! Furthermore, the Iraqi’s were “mostly” trained in the UK Military MDMP and or Soviet MDMP, not the US MDMP! This is a very “important” distinction, as I too was also trained in another Nations “MDMP” and was very different than the US MDMP I was trained in! (I will differ any comments on comparison, as when working with Foreign National Host Country Indigenous Forces it is most often more effective to let them “run” with what they know, than try to shovel something else down their throats!) Furthermore, the MDMP is based largely and/or tied directly to “intelligence” of the enemy forces and what they may or may not attempt to do- i.e. “fight the enemy, not the plan!” Ergo, one must know, whether “insurgent” or regular “conventional forces- like former Soviet Union and WARSAW PACT Forces, one must know their composition- manpower and eauipent, as well as their order of battle and standard operating “tactics!” That is why such book as “Spetsnaz - The Inside Story of The Soviet Special Forces” Hardcover – 1988 by Viktor Suvorov (Author) (at Amazon.com-
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393026140/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) are in fact simply more than important for US Operational Planners to read! For example on page 148 of Mr. Suvorov’s book it states that “Spetsnaz units at army level…are dropped in areas of operations of their own armies 100 to 500 kilometers, and spetsnaz units under command of fronts are dropped…500 to 1000 kilometer’s…” behind enemy lines! Additionally, Mr. Suvorov covers how Spetsnaz units are trained and includes many pictures such as them “wading through snow-melt” “at the Ryazan higher airborne training school!” Oddly, believe this is village that was destroyed by “Mongols” in movie “Furious” at Amazon.com-
https://www.amazon.com/Furious-Ilya...&qid=1531994820&sr=1-1&keywords=furious+movie !
Anyway, for US Military History of the MDMP in action I would highly recommend “Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians” (Classic Reprint Series) Paperback – February 1, 1995 by Brian Garfield (Author) (At Amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/Thousand-Mil...1642629&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Thousand+Mile+War ) as I know plenty of people whom served in the US Military in Alaska and in various capacities in the never ending Global War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.…! If memory serves even “notable” US Military Commander’s such as Norman Schwarzkopf, even served in Alaska at some point in their careers. Buying a used book is always an interesting experience as one never knows what one may find written or annotated inside (See attached Presentation)! This book, is in fact a much more through accounting of the War in Alaska than “World War II in the Arctic: The History of the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Nazi Germany’s Arctic Invasion of the Soviet Union.” As the jacket cover by Richard Cuffari explains: “With skillful use of official documents, diaries, and personal interviews of veterans of the conflict, he [the author] has created a dramatic and authoritative account of the war which scarifies nothing in the way of historical accuracy and objectivity…!” This is important, as not only were US Sources utilized, but also firsthand accounts by various enemy “antagonists!” Sadly, as the review of “World War II in the Arctic: The History of the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Nazi Germany’s Arctic Invasion of the Soviet Union,” states (I have included below as it is a “good” short “synopsis” of a lot of the information in this great work!) it too is sadly lacking in “tactical” maps and graphs, but more than makes up for this with very good pictures which dramatize the points the author makes. Furthermore, this book contains great “little” details about various things such as War Bonds, to fund the War! On page 67, the author states, “Taking up Buckner’s battle cry, Alaska civilians started to buy Defense Bonds for a new B-17 bomber to be called The Spirit of Alaska. Within four months they had surpassed every state in the Union by oversubscribing their War Bond Quota by 300 percent.” (See attached Presentation) Furthermore, on page 153, it demonstrates that all of America assisted in this struggle by mentioning contributions of “Mexican-American workmen of the 176th Engineers from Texas!” Oddly, the US Army Brigade in Alaska was “re-designated” from 6th Infantry Division to 176-Separate Infantry Brigade, while some veterans I know were stationed in Alaska! Finally, on page 262 it describes how “Major W.J. Perry, requisitioned a large pack of terriers trained to kill rats. The concerted effort finally won the Rat Campaign” as rats were a major problem! Sadly, this book does not, as far as I am aware cover issues such as Military Attaché’s etc.… nor really go too in-depth in the “major” role “politics” has to play in a Armed Conflict such as in the work mentioned in review below which as stated good “synopsis” this work:
“World War II in the Arctic: The History of the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Nazi Germany’s Arctic Invasion of the Soviet Union” Kindle Edition by Charles River Editors (Author) (at Amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/World-War-II...=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=world+war+2+in+the+arctic ) is really a truly “ILLUMINATING READ” as it combines/ discuses all the “facet’s” of warfare and “state-craft” into a very short read. It fully explains why “resources” such as the Finnish “nickel” mines and Scandinavian “fish-oil” were/are in fact “strategic” target’s in a “Global Conflict-WAR” such as World War II and not only that but “peace-time” and/or “dente” as well! Sort of like in today’s age or “era” of the “digital-electronic” world “rare-earth” minerals are more than highly “prized” and in abundance in such places as China, North Korea, Afghanistan, and Iraq, etc.…not to mention “oil!” Furthermore, it discusses why both the German’s and Japanese failed in their “disastrous” adventures in the Arctic. In the case of Nazi Germany, it was Adolph Hilter’s own “failure” to allow his more than “competent” military officers to “prosecute” the war by just simply giving them solid “guidance” and or an End State and allowing them to achieve it- sort of like US President Abraham Lincoln did with both General’s Grant and Sherman during the US Civil War- that resulted in “absolute victory” for the Union! Furthermore, it demonstrates how “espionage’ as well as British Commando raids in Norway, forced the German’s to maintain “high” levels of forces desperately need elsewhere “bottled-up” in Norway, etc.…! Additionally, it “describes” in plain and vivid detail of both the Nazi’s and Soviets “results” of placing both highly “untrained” troops as well as “highly- trained” troops into battle and the various radically “different” outcomes! Kind of like the difference in “causality rates” between US National Guard Forces and Active Forces in the never ending “Global War on Terror!” Furthermore, it “high-lights” the German failure, by relying “too” much on “allied” support in terms of the Finnish forces- slow/delayed deployment of their forces and “back-door” dealings the Soviets!
In the case of the “Japanese” and their “foray” int the US Aleutian Islands, it describes both why they attacked the Aleutians, as in part a “deception” plan to destroy the already highly “degraded” US Navy at Midway Island after “virtually” destroyed at Pearl Harbor! Furthermore, it describes last major Naval “gun” battle of “capital” ships in which both very old US Naval Ships and weapons, such as “torpedoes” and “air-planes” failed in comparison to much superior Japanese “technology!” Also, it describes the lack of “intelligence” information from “Japanese-spies” in Alaska/ West Coast- as were in fact “successfully” detained by the US and left the Japanese “blind” to US Force deployment to a large extent! Furthermore, the US had in fact “broken” the Japanese Naval Communications Code and as in the Movie “Wind Talkers” with Nicholas Cage, etc.…the US had a far “superior” communications code thanks to Native American’s and their language! Finally, it explains the “overall” Japanese defeat not only in the Aleutians but the entire Pacific theater as the Japanese, failed to listen to their “junior” officers and “consolidate” all their quickly “won” gains by not “consolidating” nor securing them with their “army” component and “soldiers” on the ground! Lastly, it discusses the “Japanese” warrior mind-set of “fighting” to the death, which prompted more US Causalities and the “inability” of US combat servicemen on the ground to “capture” viable intelligence assets in the form of “Prisoners!!!!” This is a most “valuable” lesson as one does in fact not want to do things that will “prompt” an enemy to “fight” to the death- such as “violating” cultural beliefs etc.…. as in the Arab-Israeli Wars, were the Arab forces would fight to the death once learned “directly” fighting “female” Israeli soldiers…...!!!!!
Finally, the book discusses the more than “numerous” difficulties” in waging all- land, naval, and air combat- in the Arctic Environment- from weather, terrain, and even local “indigenous” populations! This touches on the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) and the significant “challenges” commanders and staff’s, at all levels, have in “tying” all “components of warfare” (Land, Air, Sea, Intelligence, PSYOPS, Civil-Affairs, Science, Politics) together into a “successful” plan that will most likely not “survive” first-contact with the enemy, and thus numerous “back-up” plans or “branches’ and “sequels” must be developed as well! Additionally, the book “describes” that all forces involved in these Arctic Conflicts’ in fact were given a “End-State” plan to execute for the “political” branch of their nations once the “military” objective had in fact been achieved, like rapidly “rebuilding” infrastructure destroyed, getting “local-populace” back to being “employed” etc.… something that perhaps was lacking in the US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan???? Furthermore, this book covers the “necessity” of one “Primary” branch of a Nations Armed Services, such as the “Land Component” and all other branches providing, by and large, a supporting role- such as “naval” landings, bombardment, air-superiority to facilitate ground combat operations, etc.…as well as Air Logistical Support- “drop paratroopers, supplies, bombs, move reinforcements rapidly, etc…” to “support/reinforce” “ground” gains as in Finland as this book describes!!!!! Kind of like the movie “Transformers-Last Knight” with actor Mark Wahlberg, etc… where “autobot” character’s with “Prime-Designation” are in fact take the leading role!!! Finally, it briefly “discusses” the necessity of more than highly “trained” forces and the importance of “history” in “understanding” one’s enemy from all “aspects”- cultural, religious, scientific-educational developments, and economy (political as well as actual) etc.…!!!! Kind of like demonstrated in the movie “Patton” with former actor “George C. Scott,” were Patton claims he defeated “Rommel’s” because he read Rommel’s book “infantry Attacks”- see below! This is also demonstrated in movies like “Red-Sparrow” and “Atomic-Blonde” but do not agree Russian method in “Red-Sparrow!” There-in lies the “challenge” of ethically training and fielding much superior forces as opposed to one’s opponent!
One thing that this and other history books on “warfare” by in large neglect, is in fact the “environmental” results of such conflicts and how to “properly” dispose of the surplus of weapons once the “conflict” has ended. As well as the resultant “human-damage” of a nations veteran and their descendants, whom served in the conflict and how those nations have handled them! (See PEB Forum for issue’s both veterans and descendants face with this issue at PEB Forum Post’s “Resource Vietnam Vet's -"The US Army in Vietnam" -"The Bud Harton Collection at the Texas Tech Virtual Vietnam Archive"-Perhaps????”; “WRIISC Washington DC-FYI-Warning Proceed With Caution!”; “Tricare after medical retirement” ) Also, I agree with one reviewer here, that maps are in fact essential to the study of history, and better “maps” and “graphic timeline’s” would have been more than useful- such as something like “American History 1 (Quick Study Academic) Cards” – May 31, 2013 by Inc. BarCharts (Author) (at Amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/American-His...rds+–+May+31,+2013+by+Inc.+BarCharts+(Author) )! This “historical” timeline, among other things, outlines a whole host of “treaties” the US both kept and broke regarding such things as trade- which is of more than “STRATEGIC” importance to any Nation! Would have been nice had authors this work includes something of the sort!!!!! Finally, the book “mentions” such small details about the US use of “armor-pricing” ammunition by its Infantry soldiers in the Aleutians as to prevent “bullet’s” from “ricocheting” off the ice and or “ice-built” fortifications….!!!!! Good lesson to learn by “reading” and not “experiencing!” On that note, it also discusses the “importance” indigenous people play, such as the Native Alaskans in “assisting” in both military and civil operations. Kind of like “school of the Americas” where the US trained South American forces to “fight” for their own countries with “minimal” US involvement! (SEE: “Cia: Manual for PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS IN GUERRILLA WARFARE Paperback” – August 18, 2011 by A M Nagy (Author) at amazon.com:
https://www.amazon.com/Cia-PSYCHOLO...psychological+operations+in+guerrilla+warfare ) So why could not the US do something similar to this for “issues’ in the “Middle-East” and hopefully, minimize US direct “involvement” and the “Total Cost” of War, as well as “force” indigenous people’s to fight for their “own” INDEPENDENCE as the US, itself, has done several times in its own history!
Bottom-line: This guide to the US MDMP is a great “reference” for anyone as it’s principles can be applied not only to the US Military, but to any “civilian” business as well, as I know others whom in fact done it too some degree “successfully!” Furthermore, the book “Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians” is more than a great fully researched history- utilizing sources all sides of conflict and more than demonstrates the US MDMP in action from a “historical” perspective! I would also recommend “World War II in the Arctic: The History of the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Nazi Germany’s Arctic Invasion of the Soviet Union” as it to, although shorter version, is packed full of use full information not only on Military Operations but the Political motivations behind them and contains many “valuable lessons learned, that perhaps “others” could learn from….???? More than highly recommend this “phenomenal” work!

ALL-Thanks and greatly hope this assist's someone in "potentially getting a job"- i.e. selling their skillset above and beyond Weapons mastery, etc.. but in the realms of leadership, planning, willingness to learn quickly and flexibility, etc....- and "educates" those on the degree/depth of knowledge required to be "solider" in the US Military in the 21st Century.....perhaps???? (I have been know to be wrong on occasion.....!)
