I was put on TDRL on Nov 2010 and officially retired from AF about six months ago with 60%. I have a VA rating of 90%. I just received notification from DFAS that I was awarded 70% combat related compensation and just received payment of $490 for January, which is the first month I have received CRSC payment.

Will I receive back pay / retroactive pay ? If so, what is the date that it will start ?

    Thank you!

They use the same formula for awarding a combined rating. The amount of money you receive depends on disability percentage, amount of retirement and some other crazy stuff. The baseline starts with the 70% being the same amount of money that 70% the VA pays. After that, all the math starts.

Well I have 70% dod and 80% va. I have a yes for PTSD rated at 50% and yes for an ankle rated at 10%. The rest are no's from in the v. How would that work?

CRSC is not based on what the VA or your PEB says. Its an independent finding/ruling. The VA and the PEB could say you have 80 percent combat related disabilities, and the CRSC board could award you a 20 percent CRSC rating. That being said, the CRSC boards tend to be very liberal in their rulings.

Where do you find out how much each percent is?

The CRSC board should provide you with their decisional document showing which VA ratings were approved for CRSC.

I have already been awarded CRSC of 70%. I have just received my payment of $490/month for CRSC.

Do I receive backpay to November 2010?

Ok but is it the same rating table as the va? Where did they come up with $490/month? That's where the confusion lies with me. Also do you wait until you're separated to try for that or can you do it before with your proposed ratings?

There are specific calculations for CRSC (and CRDP), based on the relative percentages (DoD and VA) and time in service. You can search CRSC on this site to find posts on this (if you can't find them, let me know and I will link you).

You cannot get (nor should you apply for) CRSC until you are separated/retired and receiving VA comp. Until that point, there is no "offset" to restore, so you are not eligible. However, CRSC is retroactive to date of eligibility. So, do not worry that if you don't file immediately you will lose money.

The Value of the CRSC Benefit:

The 2008 CRSC monthly payment ranges from $117 to over $2772. The amount you receive depends on your disability rating, number of dependents, and other factors. CRSC payment mirrors the VA Disability Compensation payment rates.

Thank you gentlemen. It seems that I will cross that bridge when I get there since it seems to be pretty much different for everyone across the board.

I think you answered my question. I was gonna ask when I should apply for CRSC? I am awaiting my orders right now. I signed my 199 last week.

    Thanks Jason.

The reason I am asking is that my wounded warrior rep told me it my backpay COULD start from the day I was picked up by the VA which was approximately a year ago (ie: signficantly less money). I was on DFAS retirement pay from November 2010-November 2011 (rough dates).

CRSC and VA disability are two seperate things.

DFAS pays CRSC and has their own formula.

I have 70% CRSC which is $490... use that as your baseline for what you will get

    I had 10 years in, E-5, dependants.

After doing the math with my wounded warrior rep, it had me getting $670/month but the formula was clearly wrong by $200. I think the max you can get for CRSC is around $800.

I spoke with the MEB legal team at Ft. Knox and the way they explained CRSC is that it is completely separate from the VA and that it could allow you in a way to draw both. They just base the percentage off of those conditions that meet the criteria. He also said something about the condition has to be over 10%.

Condition must be at least 10% (as, if rated at 0%, there is no compensation to restore). Otherwise, this is a fair explanation.
