Just trying to see if I did this correctly.

Factors:

--7650 H-3

--14 yrs mo = 14

--14 x 2.5% = 35%

--7650 x 0.35 = $ 2677 longevity portion of retirement

--7650 x 75% = 5737.5 ret pay--$4781.16 waived via VA offset (SMC-S/K)

--100% VA w/spouse & 2 c = $4781.16

--CRSC (estimated) 60% = $2,039.88 (this is less than $2,677 longevity portion of ret pay)

--CRSC= $2039.88

You hit the max compensation amount where the chapter 61 retirement amount isn't part of the equation. By law the most you can get is your longevity earned pension + VA compensation. So the total would be $2,677 + 4781.16 = 7,458.66 which is why the total pay shows that same amount in the chart above I posted.

Thanks for the quick breakdown. Still in shock and feels undeserved, but I’ll eventually get over the guilt and realize how great it is for my family.

Also, does the SBP payment change any of the calc?
Has no affect on calculations on gross. SBP affects net to you since that would be deducted. Make sure to compare to term life insurance. My wife was going to pay almost $400 a month for SBP for a 55% net of payout of her pay. We found a 7 figure 30 year term life insurance policy that was much cheaper so we went that route instead. Also, since my wife was P&T I will qualify for DIC paid by the VA if something were to happen to her.

Provis,

This is really good advice and I did look into this before I got out. Unfortunately, I am practically uninsurable due to chronic heart failure. Too many people just take the SBP without researching, and it really is pricey.

Then even though expensive you are the perfect candidate to get it! My wife purchased her term policy several years before medically retiring. At her 15 year mark I started doing research and realized it would be smart to lock in a low cost policy now than chance it right before retirement. She was able to get 2.5 million policy on a 30 year term for $145 a month.

Can't help you without more information. To be most accurate send me via direct conversation a copy of your most recent RAS. Also, would need to know if married and or kids. Also, would need to know estimated CRSC %.

I was lucky enough to lock in
