Hey everyone! Just a heads up, I retired on 29July13, w00t!
The DD214 is supposed to be generated at 0001 the day AFTER retirement. For us AIRFORCE guys, we can access it digitally on virtual MPF (You can get username/password access for 60 days after retirement by calling MYPERS)
Well, mine was stuck on "Member Initiated DD214WS" and not FINALIZED as it was supposed to be. I called MYPER on day 5Aug and was told that their were computer issues and my would be done that night. Understandable, and satisfied I told them I would follow up the next day or two; Still not being posted the next day I called back, and got forwarded to the technician that was in charge of my specific DD214, which was unavailable. Everyone needs leave, so I understand that.
Called back AGAIN 2 days later (5 Day process total of me HOUNDING for something that should have been automatic). This time I got ahold of another tech, which was AMAZING, this TSgt (e6) was simply awesome; She informed me that for some reason I was not on the list as retiring; And that it was a great thing that i caught it. Now that alone pissed me off, but not at her, at the fact that if i did not have OCD about timing and promptness, then it would have slipped for maybe months.......Without a DD214, no education benefits, not VA compensation, no VOCREHAB, no VA healthcare.....crazy...
Moral of the story, call....call...call...and call again. Be POLITE and understanding, and you will get stuff accomplished! The more I work with the military the more I realize two (2) main things....
1. Anything can be done, its a matter of getting ahold of the right person.
2. You can achieve MOST desired outcomes with the military....refer to #1, and be polite.
This is not the first time this has worked for me, it has worked over and over and over. Good luck!
