Quick question. Let's say I am DoD rated at 30% or higher to be eligible for a medical retirement. Am I able to choose whether I am retired or separated, or is it all based on recommendations by the board. I have friend who was active duty that was rated at 80% unfit DoD and they medically separated him with severance pay. He said he had no choice.

Your freind may have misunderstood his ratings. Anything over 30% on the DoD side is medical retirement. If you are rated 0,10 or 20% then you get severance.

The board recommends whether you are fit or unfit and which co dictionary do not meet the standard for fitness.

That's strange. It makes me feel better because I was starting to get nervous. I would like medical for my family and I. He did say that he received a one time 110,000 dollar payment as severance. So I know he wasn't retired medically. He must've got shafted.

I would not use the word "shafted". The regulations are uniform. If he received severance, then his unfitting conditions had a combined rating of 0, 10 or 20%.

Severance is only temporary too. It will be recouped by the VA unless you get severed at 0% or if your unfitting condition is combat related.

You can think of severance as a 0% interest loan against future VA benefits.

Yea I talked to him again yesterday. He said he was rated less than 30% DoD, but VA combined was 80%. He misunderstood my question when I asked him.
