Intractable Migraines

I am currently on orders that in which I am solo most of the time and allow my working hours to be very flexible. I have intractable migraines after suffering a head injury, service connected, that have been diagnosed by a civilian neurologist. I suffer 2-3 migraines a week, I will have to completely stop what I am doing and find sanctuary in a dark, quite place for hours. I have been on meds that aren’t helping and received my first Botox injection therapy, that did nothing for me. I go in for my second session of botox in a couple weeks. I don’t think it will help because I don’t have tension migraines, they started after a head injury. I have not said anything to my command yet. I am trying to not to expose it because I don’t want to jeopardize my job in the service, and I am hoping the meds and procedures will help but it looks like they won’t. I have heard Botox is the “last hope” for migraine treatment if nothing else has worked. I will not be able to keep up and be sucessful with the work I will be doing with my rate once these orders are finished. I am barely keeping it together with these orders I’m on. Are the Botox injections the “last hope” for migraines? If so I will have to expose my issue to the command, most likely spawning a MEB.

I am being boarded for Migraines and am a long-time migraine sufferer. I recently tried Botox injections to help (hopefully) reduce the number and frequency. So far, Botox has been a life-changer and I plan to continue. There were very little side effects, primarily a sore neck a few days afterwards, but some Tylenol helped. I would highly recommend!

I am afraid they won’t help me due to the cause of my migraines being a head injury. Did you have an injury that caused your migraines or were they caused by “tension” or something like that?

Also what was responsible for your board being started?

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

Hmm, did your head injury result in any other residual medical condition(s) like a mild concussion or mTBI? If yes, then it's highly important to have it well documented within your medical records now just in case a DoD IDES MEB/PEB is required in the distance future; at least in my opinion. Take care!

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer!"

Best Wishes!

Yes, I was concussed on two separate military training static line jumps. My PCM and he neurologist he referred me to both annotated it in their write ups. Will that be sufficient for the DOD IDES MEB/PEB?

Indeed, it should as long as those particular medical condition(s) is(are) affecting your abilities to perform your assigned military duties then a DoD IDES MEB/PEB will probably be referred in the distance future. Take care!

Any updates with your board? I am very glad to hear the botox injections helped you. I hope your quality of life greatly improves!

No updates as of today, other than my package being received 3 weeks ago. Botox has been a God-send for my migraines. I go every 3 months for injections. I've had a few since but nothing like I was having before. I would highly recommend if others are considering. No side-effects other than a little soreness around neck and back but aspirin quickly provided relief.

i know this post is somewhat old, but wanted to weigh in as well. my husband is currently going through the MEB process and was tried on 13 medications. then he found botox. they tried it on him for the first time and it didn't work at all. a few weeks later, they gave him more botox and he is a different person now. but, because of this, he is not deployable. he gets his ratings/findings tomorrow. but well worth the fact that he doesn't have migraines as frequent.

Botox did help me and like you, my migraines were caused by a service connected head injury. Also.... a chiropractor helped me a TON. I am not fixed, botox and the chiro are both a short lived relief but they stop the daily pain for a bit to give me relief.

i wish someone would tell the gods that be in my husband's medboard process this - because apparently he is fine to them, albeit all the medical documentation and his neurologist saying otherwise. you are exactly right - botox and chiro is a very short lived relief.
