Just starting MEB!

Hello everyone,

VERY new to this process so I’m not that knowledgeable about what to expect. I’ve been in the Army over 10 years and in January started seeking treatment for mental health issues...fast forward to May and I was being recommended/sent off for a inpatient treatment hospital (28 days) that was supposed to help a ton and get things back on the right track. When I returned I had been diagnosed with Chronic PTSD and my physiatrist and therapist both thought it is best for me to start the MEB process (because things ARE WORSE). I just met with the PEBLO and VA person to go over all issues I would like to get checked out on the way out. They said I should be taking my physicals within the next few weeks and am just curious about what to expect and how to prepare for the best outcome? The following is what all I will be going in for:

1) PTSD
2) Insomnia
3) Obstructive Sleep Apnea (CPAP)
4) Left Shoulder (Surgery and not fixed)
5) Headaches
6) Bilateral Planters Fasciitis
7) Bilateral knee popping/locking pain
8) Vertigo
9) Skin Rash
10)Tinnitus
11) Right Forearm Tear (never repaired)

Not 100% sure what to expect through all of this but I’m assuming the goal is to get over 30% so I get retired? The only unfit condition should be the PTSD but I’m still trying to figure out how all that’s rated and works... I have also heard I need to have letters from family/friends/co-workers of how badly I am affected by these issue (MH) and what “happened” during deployments to cause this? Any advise or recent knowledge of the process is appreciated.

what are they referring you for?...only the PTSD? you will be put on TDRL(min. 50% disability pay) and evaluated at least every 6-18 months for up to 3 years, then they will make their final determination and your rating will either go up or down. everything will be via the VA disability and seems you should be near or at 100%, but every case is different...that's the nerve-racking part...you'll never know what you're getting until the process is almost over.

Thank you for the feedback! I just finished my Exams 2 weeks ago and PEBLO said I’m waiting on them to send their write up back. Yes my only referred condition was the PTSD. They sent that up 2 weeks after I got out of that treatment center. So if I get that 50% and “medically retired” what happens if they do those re-evaluations and drop my %...do I then loose the medical insurance?

You’ll only lose it if you go below 30%.
30-100%=PDRL retirement
0-20%= separation/severance pay

Airborne Tiger,

As shown above, if placed on TDRL the minimum disability pay percentage will be 50%. The range for the PDRL is 30-100%, also shown above.

Your retired pay will be reduced dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received.

If qualified (and approved) for Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) some of the waived retired pay can be replaced not to excced the dollar amount of the longevity portion of your retired pay.

Gotcha, I’m not 100% sure this will come back as unfit but my doctors seem to think it will for sure. Thank you for the info.

You’re welcome. I mentioned the reduction/waiver since many seem to be unaware of the process.

Good luck,
Ron
