I am hoping you still run the numbers for people... :)

1. Gross Retired Pay on DFAS RAS $1844.00

2. My DoD disability rating is 60%

3. My active duty 7 years and 2 months

4. VA compensation: I have 100% VA Compensation, $3737.85, Veteran only

5. I have Total Combat-Related Disability 10% Dec 2012- December 2019; Total Combat-Related Disability 50% Jan 2020

6. I was put on the Permanent physical disability list after 12 years 9 months and 29 days in the National Guard. I was discharged by the Army Physical Disability Agency with 7 years of active duty accumulated.

I am spinning in circles trying to figure out if I will be entitled to CRSC payments and how much they will be if I am. I can't figure out if I am entitled to a nice chunk of back pay or if nothing is even payable for 16 years when I reach age 60. Thank you so much for your assistance. I really do appreciate it.

Hello @BobbiWashingtonState ,

An estimate:

1. If your APPROVED CRSC percentage is 10%, you will receive the amount of money for 10% in the applicable VA compensation tables for Veteran alone.

2.
If your APPROVED CRSC percentage is 50%, you will receive the amount of money for 50% in the applicable VA compensation tables for Veteran alone
OR the amount of the hypothetical longevity portion of your retired pay, WHICHEVER is less/lower.

3. 1844 / 60% = 3073 contemporary average high three base pay
—7 years 2 months (active duty equivalent inferred) 7.17 years x 2.5% = 17.9% longevity multiplier
—3073 x 17.9% = 550.07 longevity portion of retired pay using current dollars.

4. Again, the lesser amount is paid after comparing the amount in the tables and the longevity amount. Those amounts will be different in previous years.

5. Your active duty equivalent is shown on your retirement orders as : DISABILITY RETIREMENT xx years xx months

6. A CH 61 retiree with less than 20 years can be eligible for CRSC.

7. A collection of CRSC info: Contemporary CRSC Information--Also See Update at Bottom of this Resource Page <—-LINK

@RonG thank you so much for computing my scenario. Can you look over the rest of my calculations? Some of the numbers are placeholder guestimates but just trying to get a ball park idea.

I couldn't find tables for 2017 or before so I used $120 as a placeholder for December 2012 -November 2017 then actuals until January 2020 when I used a placeholder amount of $500 for the longevity limiter until December 2023 when your calculations show an actual longevity limiter of $550.07. So here is what my spreadsheet looks like...

Am I figuring this correct??? They are going to back pay me somewhere in the neighborhood of $38K?

I also have PTSD which I may be able to prove combat connection for and that's rated at 70%... but was lower to start with... so there is a possibility that things will get recalculated during the 10% time... It won't change anything for the 50% time because the longevity limiter is already maxed correct?

Thank you again for explaining. I really do appreciate your help and I see you helping so many others. Thank you.

Bobbi

Bobbi - you would only be retro back to 2018, due to the six-year limitation on retro pay, but the rest of what you did is pretty much spot on. Subtract out anything from prior to 2018 and you should be good with your numbers. Remember it's ONLY an estimate.

Wow thats a lot to digest! Thank you so much for your help on this. Have a fantastic day.

Bobbi
It's always nice to force-feed someone big numbers like this ;) Even if it's just an estimate. There are other factors that can mitigate this, but seeing that you're less than 20 years AFS, it does take out CRDP from the equation.

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you. My first CSRC payment is hitting my bank at $547.00. Your estimate was very close. This has a start date of 2012… does that mean they will back pay to then? I originally applied in 2017 but they denied my claim. I also have submitted additional evidence that will hopefully increase my combat percentage from 10% to 40% from my retirement in 2011 until I was upgraded to 50% in Jan 2020. It would increase the 2020 percentage but since I’ve already surpassed the longevity amount it won’t change the amount.

Pretty sure my VA backpay will be in this range $31,907.92 - $38,356.85. The first is if they limit me to 6 years from my request to review the denial the second is if they go back 6 years from my original request that was denied. I also submitted a letter from my commander that could increase it by $10,617.22 or $25,174.84 based on the same reasons as before.... for a grand total range of $42,525.14 - $63,531.68.

I have had a rough couple of years and this money could really make a difference on my ability to get my life back on track. I think the not knowing and uncertainty of it all is very stressful.

Was your approved claim the one they initially denied? If so there’s a good chance it’ll go back to 2012, but I’m not DFAS so don’t quote me on that lol

I am a 100% CRSC with a 20 year letter (7 years active and 15 year reserves .My medical board 100% . Does it matter if My CRSC award letter states that I was injured by instrument of war are conflict of war ( I was on a mission. My unit was ambush. My vehicle was blew up by your IED's I sustain 3th degree burns to Hands, leg and 2 degree to face. Currently I getting 1400 CRSC I look at the chart that pays CRSC The max is 2500 am I eligible for that pay

CRSC for a CH 61 disability retiree is the
—Hypothetical longevity portion of retired pay
OR
—the amount associated with the approved CRSC percentage
WHICHEVER IS THE LEAST/lower/ lesser

It sounds like you are receiving the longevity amount,

Ron

Can you explain the breakdown please
Hello,

Here is one of the CRSC computations on this site:

1. If your APPROVED CRSC percentage is 10%, you will receive the amount of money for 10% in the applicable VA compensation tables for Veteran alone. (His case)

@DMXTONY yes it sounds like the “longevity” portion of you retirement you limiting factor.

It’s the same for me. I receive $547 of my $1844 in retirement… because that’s the “longevity” portion of my retirement. CRSC pays the lessor of the VA disability rate for your percentage or the amount of the disability that’s computed from the length of service. If you read through my conversation you will see the calculation…

From above
“3. 1844 / 60% = 3073 contemporary average high three base pay
—7 years 2 months (active duty equivalent inferred) 7.17 years x 2.5% = 17.9% longevity multiplier
—3073 x 17.9% = 550.07 longevity portion of retired pay using current dollars.”

I hope this helps…

Yes indeed. Thanks Ron

Good evening Ron,

I would appreciate your help sir.

Soon to be Medically retired: combat service connected Iraq
DOD rating 70%
Active Duty service: 9 years 8 Months
VA rating: 80% 2447 with 4 dependents
Applying for CRSC August 24 when I officially retire

Hello,

The following will be needed:

1. DOD rating
2. High three average base pay
3. Active duty equivalent
4. VA: percentage; amount; dependents by category; number; ages
5. Blended retirement plan?
6. Expected CRSC percentage (guess)

I will look for your reply in early morning

Ron

Good evening Ron,

I would appreciate your help sir.

DOD rating 70%
Active Duty service: 9 years 8 Months
VA rating: 80% 2447 with 4 dependents

Just make sure your VA compensation has kicked in before submitting, certainly get everything prepped ahead of time. If you submit too early, it'll get kicked back. What branch are you?

1. DOD rating: 70%
2. High 3: 3765
3. 9 years 8 months
4. VA rating: 80%
5. No
6. CRSC: 70%
Hello,

Sorry for the delay; watching the Olympics has disrupted my sleep schedule. The VA info I requested is missing.

Anyway…

a. 3765 x 70% = 2635.50 retired pay
b. Total VA amount per earlier message = 2447
c. 2635.50 ret pay minus 2447 = 188.50 residual retired pay
d. 9.67 AD Equivalent x 2.5% = 24.18% longevity multiplier
e. 3765 x 24.18% = 910.38 hypothetical longevity amount which without having the precise dependent info can obviously show the longevity is less than 70% in the VA comp tables
f. The VA pays = all your VA compensation
g. DFAS will pay 188.50 residual retired pay
AND
910.38 minus 188.50 = 721.88 CRSC

Based on your information.

Ron
