Can I get a little help with my CRSC calculation? I recieved my decision letter today.

Dfas retirement 3056
Dfas retirement at 90 percent.
Va award 90 percent 2658
Years 13.2
Crsc award 50%
No blended retirement.
Wife and 2 kids.

Also, any feedback on timeline now that a decision has been made on when I might see any award payments, to include backpay? I retired in 2017 and finally claimed it. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

We need the following to compute your CRSC :

1. Average high three base pay OR better, the GROSS RETIRED PAY from your DFAS RAS. State which. (The RAS INFO IS BEST)
2. DoD disability retirement percentage
3. Active duty equivalent (this info is found on your retirement orders as DISABILITY RETIREMENT xx years xx months xx days
4. VA compensation
percentage
—amount
—dependents by category and age
—any SMCs ?

5. Did you have the blended retirement plan?
6. Approved CRSC percentage

Please reply to all in one post. Use descriptions of what you are furnishing (example: my active duty equivalent is…)

Estimate

a. 3056 /75% = 4074.67 high three
b. 3056 minus 2656 = 400 residual retired pay
c. 13.166 x 2.5% = 32.92% longevity multiplier
d. 4074.67 x 32.92% = 1341.38 hypothetical longevity amount
e. 1341.38 minus 400 residual = 941.38 one of the CRSC ceilings
f. CRSC @50% spouse and 2 children = 1,255.16 + 51 TOTAL: 1306.16
g. The combination of CRSC and residual retired pay cannot exceed the hypothetical longevity amount.
DfAS will pay 941.38 in CRSC and 400 in residual retirement pay
h. VA will pay all the VA comp.

This was a little more complex than I first thought.

f. CRSC @50% spouse and 2 children = PLACEHOLDER FOR TWO MINUTES
So does this mean I would collect my VA pay with the estimated CRSC amount of 941.38= 3597? And the 400 residual goes away, correct?

Hello,

You keep the 400 residual retired pay and DFAS will pay 941.38 in CRSC.
You get all your VA comp.

Chapter 61 Disability Retirees:
Each CH 61 case involves these ceilings and other factors:

—Must be entitled to retired pay
—Agrees to waive retired pay in the amount of VA compensation received.
—CRSC cannot exceed the amount of the waived retired pay.
—CRSC cannot exceed the amount of the approved CRSC percentage (amt in VA Comp tables).
—CRSC cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.
—CRSC when combined with residual retired pay cannot exceed the longevity amount.

As one can see, more than one of the ceilings shown above could apply to the retiree. In those cases, the lesser amount is the CRSC amount.

Ron

The total from DFAS = 1341.38 hypothetical longevity amount
400 is paid as residual retired pay and the rest is CRSC.

VA pays ALL your VA comp to you.

Thanks Ron,

I've been stalking this forum for some time and your knowledge is what helped me finally decide to pursue this. What you continue to do for service members cannot be understated. Even if they should be simple explanations. Sincerely, thank you.

Hey Ron, can I please get an updated calculation? The VA put me at 100 percent pt. Increased ptsd from 50 to 70 percent. Submitting adjustment soon. That should put my crsc from 50 rating (1026.00) monthly to 70 percent. Va monthly award increase to 4300. Everything else is the same
