Hello looking for help with attempting to figure out my CRSC. Little worried since i got wounded and medically retired with only 6yrs and 5 months i see higher CRSC from what i've seen with people who have been in alot longer:

70% DOD
100% VA
100% CRSC
My Retired pay was calculated at 1744.00
6 yrs 5 months active service
E-5 Married with 2 kids.

Thank you for all the help!

Hi SSJSteve,

All of the following is needed for an estimate:
  1. High three average base pay OR gross retired pay on DFAS RAS (indicate which is provided) Example: 3500 from DFAS RAS
  2. Precise number of active duty or active duty equivalent years and months. Example: 9 years and 3 months
  3. DoD Disability percentage Example: 60% DoD
  4. VA percentage; the amount; and number of dependents by category Example: 100%; 3400; spouse and 3 children under 18
  5. Approved CRSC rate OR expected CRSC rate Example: 80% approved CRSC
  6. Indicate if any of the following apply: have 20 good years for reserve retirement OR received REDUX Example: have 20 good years for reserve retirement.

A. 1744 gross/0.70 = ~2491 high three—all waived due to VA compensation of 3367
B. 6.416 yrs x 0.025 = 16.04% multiplier
C. 2491 x 0.1604 =399.56 dollar amount of longevity portion of retirement pay
D. Your CRSC will be ~399.56 based on your data

Note: CRSC for CH 61 retirees is the lesser of the longevity portion of retirement pay
OR
The amount for the approved CRSC percentage which is 3367.10 in this case.

CRSC = 399.56

Thank you so much for answering this RonG!

The Retro Pay thing i see on my letter does that go back to when the CRSC application started?

The CRSC approval letter will show the effective date. You should receive retro CRSC to that date.

Good luck,
Ron

I am also trying to figure out all this CRSC calculation stuff. If you can help I would appreciate it. I just got onto HRC and found my approval letter.

60% DOD
90% VA
60% CRSC from Dec2013 - Aug 2016
80% CRSC from Sept 2016 to present
High 3 $2364.1
Reserves with deployment. Looking at my points and dividing by 360 = 7.997
divorced 2 kids

Hello
All of the following is needed for an estimate (and please provide the info in the format suggested):
  1. High three average base pay OR gross retired pay on DFAS RAS (indicate which is provided) Example: 3500 from DFAS RAS (Info from most recent DFAS RAS is preferred since it includes recent COLA increases)
  2. Precise number of active duty or active duty equivalent years and months. Example: 9 years and 3 months active duty
  3. DoD Disability percentage Example: 60% did
  4. VA percentage, all of the following; the amount; and number of dependents by category Example: 100%; 3400; spouse and 3 children under 18
  5. Approved CRSC rate OR expected CRSC rate Example: 80% approved CRSC
  6. Indicate if any of the following apply: have 20 good years for reserve retirement OR received REDUX Example: have 20 good years for reserve retirement.
Active duty equivalent for reservists: Retirement orders should have this info.

You're providing quite a service with these calculations. Very much appreciated! I tried to use the DFAS calculator located on the DFAS web site but it would not work (or even appear) on any of my computers, even when the permissions for flash was turned on. In any case, I, too, am in need of your help in trying to figure out the dollar amount for compensation. If you can help, here's my info:

1. Retired pay/DFAS RAS: 3780

2. Precise number of active duty or active duty equivalent years and months. 27 years, 9 months active duty

3. DoD Disability percentage Example: 0%

4. VA percentage; the amount; and number of dependents by category 100%; 3227; with spouse

5. Approved CRSC rate OR expected CRSC rate: 100%

6. Indicate if any of the following apply: No reserve time - all AD

Your help is extremely appreciated!! thank you,

Mike

--------------

The active duty CRSC cases are usually quite easy.

CRDP: If your gross retired pay is 3780, 3227 would be CRDP shown on page two of the DFAS RAS and the gross of 3780 on page one would include the 3227 CRDP. CRDP is retired pay.

CRSC: If your gross retired pay is 3780, 3227 would be shown on a separate CRSC statement (DFAS). The difference between 3780 gross retired pay and the VA offset of 3227 is 553 residual retired pay which is taxable; Summary of CRSC situation: 3227 CRSC which replaces all the VA offset PLUS 533 residual retired pay = 3780

Ron

Thanks for this - but I'm still confused on the actual combined/concurrent monthly compensation. Is the total amount 3227 plus the 3780, or is the total number something different?

My head hurts from reading so much about this.

Good question.

You have to choose between CRDP and CRSC; you cannot receive both simultaneously.

In both instances you will receive 3780 from DFAS, period. You also received 3227 in VA comp in both instances.

DFAS CRDP: The 3780 is taxable in most cases TOTAL= 3780 (plus 3227 from VA)
DFAS CRSC: 3227 is non-taxable; 553 taxable ret pay TOTAL = 3780 (plus 3227 from VA)

VA compensation is 3227 in both cases.

Thanks, Ron! All clear now.

Here is the information you requested in the correct format. I did have to make a correction because my DOD dropped when I went for TDRL to Perm.

1. RAS $1000.07

2. 7 years 11 months

3. DOD 60% starting December 2013
DOD decreased to 40% November 2015

4. VA 60% starting November 2013
VA 90% starting September 2016

5. 60% CRSC from Dec2013 - Aug 2016
80% CRSC from Sept 2016 to present

6. n/a Medical Retired less than 20

Note: Not all requested info was provided
Computation @ 40% for DoD; 90% VA; & 80% CRSC

A. Gross retired pay 1000.07/0.40 = about 2500 high three
B. 7.916 Active Duty Years x 0.025 = 19.79% multiplier
C. 2500 x 0.1979 = 494.75 dollar amount of the longevity portion of retirement pay
D. 494.75 is the ceiling for your CRSC in accordance with law

Using the figures for your current situation,
40% for DoD; 90% VA; & 80% CRSC
your monthly CRSC is 494.75 per the info you provided.

Hello RonG,

Need a little help with a calculation since the DFAS calculator is not working. I was medically retired December of last year, and I recently submitted an application for CRSC. My "retirement check" is coming from the VA, I do not receive one from the USAF. I'm not too sure, but I'm guessing if they base it off of my VA records it's going to be around 50%. Here's my info...

70% DoD Rating
100% VA Rating
50% CRSC Rating (pending)
Active Duty 14 yrs 6 mos (TIS)
E-6 w/ Spouse and 2 children
High 3 = $3734.67

Any help would be awesome! Thanks...

Hello,

1. 3734.67 H-3 x 0.70 = 2614.27 gross retired pay, reduced by more than 3000 VA compensation
2. 14.5 years AD x 0.025 = 36.25% multiplier
3. 3734.67 x 0.3625 = 1353.82 dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay
4. 50% CRSC with spouse & 2 children under 18 = ($1,026.36 + 42) Total: 1068.36
5. Item 4 is less than the ceiling at item 3, 1353.82 = 1068.36 CRSC payable

Ron

Note: The DFAS calculator was flawed and had not been updated since 2014
