In 2020 DFAS completed their BCNR ordered audit to remit my backpay and allowances. In July they provided a computation table showing how they arrived at the figures. They also included a W2 tax form showing the appropriate deductions. A short time later, the net was direct deposited into my bank account. The net of the figures on the W2 matches the deposit. All was good, so I thought.
In my mailbox January 2021, I received another 2020 W2 form from DFAS with completely different figures and no clue what triggered the payment. The form didn't indicate that it was a corrected form, but nonetheless, the previous form I received matched as I said above. Considering I'm about to file my 2020 taxes, I don't want to pay a tax or file an IRS form on monies that I haven't received. If they're planning to send me more money, then I have no quips with filing both W2 forms.
I contacted by telephone the DFAS Debt and Claims department that was on the included letter, but they said couldn't help me. I created a ticket and they closed it and said they sent an email to the relevant team that should handle my question. I opened another ticket requesting contact information for that team, yet I haven't heard anything back.
What should I do next that I haven't already thought of? Who can I call? My tax preparer has me in the queue to do my taxes and this is the last thing that needs to be sorted before we do the computations and filing for this tax year.
