(NOTE: This post is very similar to one found in "Army Info Forum." The difference is that this TAC, though dated, should govern all services. It should be used as a starting point for deciding what code is appropriate).

The Veterans Affairs Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD) contains the rating criteria that the PEB uses to assign ratings. The schedule covers every body part. However, there are many condition that are not covered. Because the schedule rates functional impairment, it is possible to rate a condition not listed by analogy to another condition that limits function of your body part. DODI 1332.39 contains a Table of Analagous Codes (TAC) that provides some of the more common analagous ratings. It is attached below. Note that it is somewhat dated as some of the VASRD codes have been revised since this was published. That may void the legal force of certain analagous codes. If you don't see your condition in the VASRD, check here first. The TAC will assign diagnostic codes as follows: The first four digit number will be arrived at by finding the first two digits of a closely related disease or body part. The second two digits will be "99" which indicates that the next four digit number was arrived at by analogy. The second four digit number will be the code that the condition will be rated on.

If there is not analagous code published, the PEB will assign their own analagous rating. Since this is not codified in any regulation, you and your attorney will have some room to argue for a different code (and thus a different criteria). This situation is extremely rare, however. In most cases there are standard codes, and where there is not, there is usually an analagous code.
