Hello everyone,

I'm in the Reserves, I have my 20 years, I'm 58 and I have reached my retirement age to receive military pay, I'm 100% P/T with the VA.

I'm also going through a LOD and probably forced retirement or disability retirement. I was diagnosed with PTSD, MDD, and Anxiety from my 2014 deployment in 2020. In late 2023 I tried to commit suicide before my wife got to me. I was admitted to the VA psych ward for a week and then to another facility for five weeks. I'm an ART so I just used sick leave, when I got back to work, not one person from my chain of command has ever asked if I'm okay or I need anything. My unit doesn't really care for people, so I knew I would have to do this alone.

My question is, should they, will they put me on orders during any of the process? I don't know how long the process is and I don't want to have a bad year.

Thank you all for your advise and assistance.

Why don't you just apply for your Reserve retirement? Since you have 20 year letter you get your pension AND your VA disability? I would much rather go that route than deal with the uncertain timelines with IDES.

I wasn't sure I wanted to retire at the time. There are a couple benefits to disability retirement, TriCare immediately, and if determined combat related, some or all could be tax-free. Wouldn't I get all of these benefits under medical retirement?

But you get tricare immediately with your reserve retirement. CRSC works like CRDP and you only get one. There aren't many benefits to a medical retirement if you immediately qualify to receive your non regular reserve retirement AND you still get VA disability. By law you can't get more than the total of your longevity pension earned + VA disability. So you are maxed out.

Quick update: Reservist do not get TriCare retired until they reach age 60 no matter if you have reduced retirement or not. The cost for TriCare prime between age 59 (when I retire) and age 60 is 1400 a month. On my 60th birthday I get TriCare retired for 840 dollars a year for my family. I'm still going to punch the button for retirement on July 7th either way. My LOD has been at AFRC for over three months and I am tired of waiting. Thank you

Thanks for letting all of us know. That's crazy that you can be eligible for a retirement but not get Tricare because you qualified for an earlier retirement due to qualified deployments reducing the eligible age to receive it.

Have you transferred to the retired reserve? Did you apply for Tricare Retired Reserve prior to age 60?
