PDBR says retired, next steps?

I received the letter yesterday saying that I am being changed from the original 10% seperation to medical retirement 30%.

I am currently rated at 100% P&T with IU through the VA. The letter said I need to call and schedule a briefing for SBP, but nothing else. Do I have to request the new DD214, or contact DFAS, when can I get TRICARE, new ID cards? I have looked through the forums for help, but everyone has such unique cases and it seems like there is no standard procedure in place for this. I understand most people say 60-90 days for everything, but I'm just wondering what I can do to get things going. Thanks

Congrats on retirement!!! The timeframe for each branch appears to be a bit different. I was AF, after I received my notification in Aug, I completed my SBP briefing a few days later. I received my retirement orders/214 through milconnect in Dec and was finally able to get my ID card in Jan. As soon as I received my ID card, I enrolled in Tricare

Congrats on your retirement @Hoofty
As you can see from the reply above, just like everything else in the process, nothing happens fast.

Congratulations on your retirement!!!!

I think i am in the last phase of the PDRB they said they sent my file to my service.. what was your time frame before you were notified of your findings.. Also congrats

Total time from when they received my application was about 22 months. My SBP briefing is scheduled for this Friday and once that's done they can start to update my file. Good luck and hang in there, it's a long process...

Congrats on your retirement! I just hit a year. It's tough to wait so long. I've already waited and had to think about that rating for the last 14 years.

Where did you. Go for SBP briefing? I’ve been out for some time now and no longer near an installation so I’m just curious if my board comes back favorably.

Let me know when you find out. I heard you have to call last duty station for brief. If you are close you can travel, if not you do it over the phone. I have also seen you have to contact DFAS. If this is true or not, I cannot be 100%. But 2 phone calls don’t hurt!

The SBP is part of the DD Form 2656 (Data for Payment of Retired Personnel). If you are more then 50 miles from a military installation (your branch of service) the SBP brief will be done via phone and the DD 2656 emailed to you to fill out and send back. At least this his how the Air Force did it. All branch of service retirement processes are different and when this form comes into play.

I called about an SBP briefing and after a little bit of a run around I was told basically "don't call us, we will call you." Do I need to have this? I was not married when I was discharged and I am still not married.

No, if not married, you are not required to enroll in the SBP. In fact, I doubt you are eligible for it.

Good luck,
Ron

Although you don't have to enroll in the SBP, the briefing is required for AF retirees. The SBP (accepted or declined) is part of the DD Form 2656 which initiates your retired pay account with DFAS. The DD Form 2656 will initiate the further directives you receive from the office of the Secretary of Air Force rescinding your original separation orders and creating your retirement orders stating you accepted/declined the SBP briefing as well.

Can someone breakdown say cost analysis of SBP? I’m still awaiting on the ABCMR, but from my understanding The SBP wouldn’t be beneficial. The reason I say such is because of VA DIC. So say I die from a sc condition and I was retired my wife wouldn’t get both DIC and SBP because of the widows tax so to me until they actually repeal the widows tax it doesn’t seem beneficial to enroll into SBP. If I’m wrong please educate me as I would like to make a well informed decision in the event I win my retirement.

Full disclosure: I/we declined the SBP for personal reasons 28 years ago.

SBP: Cause of death is immaterial .

DIC: Cause of death must be service connected.

Just thought I would give everyone an update. I have been going around in circles trying to find out what was going on with my change to Medical Retirement since September 9, 2019. I followed the instructions for the SBP, which were to contact a number. That number directed me to an office at the local AFB. As I mentioned before I was told basically to not contact them and they would contact me. I tried reaching out to AFPC in September and was told they did not have anything listed for me and to contact the review board. The review board told me to contact AFPC.

I decided to give AFPC time to get the paperwork to update my records. I contacted them in November and they actually opened a case and researched what was going on. They told me that they had not received the paperwork yet and I would need to reach out to the board again. I emailed the board on November 22 and informed them what was going on and I was stuck in a never-ending loop. I had to again reach out on December 4th because I had not heard from them. They finally emailed me on December 5th telling me they had escalated my issue.

I just got an email today telling me that since I never completed my SBP they had to follow the laws and wait 90 days to see if I would elect for my SBP. They let me know I should have contacted the SBP office constantly until I got an appointment. I now have to wait another 30-60 days for my records to be updated. Then they told me to basically not contact them again and to reach out to AFPC if I had further questions.

I am glad I finally have an answer, have an end in sight and I hope my roller coaster experience can be assistance to someone in the future.

Hello. I was wondering where in milconnect did you find your retirement orders/214? I am trying to navigate the site but it is not that user-friendly. The only place I can find where I can get my 214 is the Defense Personnel Records Information Retrieval System (DPRIS) section. I just want to make sure I am looking in the correct location.

It is my understanding that DPIRS is the correct location in milconnect, under the “service” something group.

Thanks. I can request copies of all my paperwork from that location. Looks like nothing has been updated in regards to my retirement as of yet.
