In addition to the monthly compensation you may receive from the VA, and the medical care, there is another benefit for being a veteran when applying for a State or Federal job.

It's called Veteran Preference Points. Disabled honorably discharged veterans are awarded double the points of most other veterans. If you are worried about finding a career after you are discharged, you can always look there.

There is a tab at the top dedicated just to veterans. The biggest downside is the length of time it may take between applying for the job and finding out if you've been hired or not. A friend of mine applied to work at the DMV and it took her several months before she found out that she had the job.
