What do we do about healthcare?

Seeing that I will be 90% VA and 60% Army.... What do I do at my next employer? Can you opt out of their healthcare because we already have it? That way we get a bigger paycheck? Or do we take it?

Depends on the employer. Most should let you opt out (though you may want to check how that could effect your taxes with current laws [ie "Obamacare"]). IF you have an dependents, you CANNOT opt out if you want them covered. The only way to cover them through an employer is to cover yourself, too. There are some good companies out there that cover the employee for free...all you'd have to pay for is your dependents.

I've HEARD (don't know...hopefully someone can verify/clarify) that if you're insured, the VA will reimburse the deductible and any other expenses...and bill your insurance to help pay for your fees when you go to them to help save costs. Again, what I've heard...not a fact.

I had the same question this week.
Now I have been told and read a little bit on National
Health Care. Some say that Tricare and Tricace for Life
will not meet the minimum to opt out. I read online and have
been told the opposite because Congress is or has, hammered
out the details for Chapter 61 and 62 we are covered, family's not so sure.
What I know for sure is if you fail to have or buy into the
state exchange that's ruled by the Fed you will have your
tax exemptions withheld during and lost that's the penalty for
not getting with the program.

They re-worded obama care to count tri-care standard/prime/remote/for life etc as acceptable. If you are chp 61 and eligible for tricare for life then you meet the requirement. furthermore IF your taxable income is below the threshold then you should be eligible for the reimbursement. Although I suspect in the coming months/year we will find out more and more stuff wrong with O'care and as much as I am for socialized medicine, this was not the way to do it and this hodgepodge of laws/taxes/boards etc. should be thrown out.

That said at 60/90 not knowing your conditions withstanding, will yuo be putting in for TDIU? SSDI? if you put in for SSDI there is medicare concerns you have to face with tricare.

Tricare exempts you from Obamacare requirements. See link below and read the whole bill if you like. Bottom line is if you are enrolled in Tricare, which you will be in at least Tricare Standard if retired, then you don't have to worry about Obamacare.

Also here is a link for the Affordable Healthcare Act page. Here too you can see that both Tricare and VA are considered as meeting the insurance qualifications.

What does this mean to you? You are covered and need not worry when you head to civilian employment. It carries the possibility of negotiating yourself into a higher salary because an employer will not have to pay for you. It gives you a distinct advantage when negotiating your salary as you offer a potentially large windfall for employers. It employer is going to be different and will make their own choice, as will you.
