My name is John, I am currently rated at a combined overall rating of 60% disability for ptsd and shrapnel wounds through the VA, though I do have other claims/appeals in process. I was in the army from feb 2003 to feb 2006. I currenty suffer from severe ptsd, tbi, and shrapnel wounds. I was in Iraq a little over a year that was from mid 2005-2006. During my tour in Iraq I was injured several different times in combat, I suffer from TBI due to concussions from IEDs and RPGs. I don't have a disability rating for my TBI as of yet because some of my medical records got mixed up and/or lost. Some of the concussions were not documented like they were supposed to be because at the time they happened we were on a mission for about 2 weeks and we were not able to go back to base or to a hospital for treatment at the time it happened. I have been going to the VA for a few years now and they have documented that I did suffer from these concussions but they do not have an exact date for the incident since we were not able to go to medical because of the mission we were on. We were ordered to continue on our mission. I just came across some information about the TSGLI claim a few days ago and I am looking for some advice/help in how to complete my application because I know that I qualify for the TBI and ADL. My wife has to assist me getting out of bed because I get dizzy and loose sight in my right eye and sometimes blurry vision due to my TBI. I also have a hard time remembering most things and my wife also has to tell me or remind me to do things such as "you forgot to wash your back or she will have to wash my lowere extremities because I will get dizzy from bending over for a period of time. I recieved a purple heart while in combat for shrapnel wounds from enemy fire. I put in a claim for TBI a couple years ago but it was denied because they did not see medical evidence stating my concussions (it was not recorded correctly because we were on a 2 week mission) but my fellow soldiers can write statements in support of this to prove that it indeed did happen. I know that the IEDs were supposed to be reported but I do not know an exact date they occured or how to get that evidence. I am hoping that I can talk to someone who has more insight and can help me with my claim and what to do since the concussion was not reported. I did however have a c&p rating last month for an appeal on my TBI and should recieve those results at any time now. My primary care doctor at the VA did however write a statement saying that I am diagnosed with a TBI although I do not have a disability rating for it yet. I have been through so much since I got out of service, I lost my brand new house and 2 brand new cars because the military took away my GI bill and garnished the little disability I had at the time because they said I did not qualify for my GI bill benefits I was recieving since I had to take some of my classes online (because of my severe ptsd I can not be in a class setting at the college because of the crowds of people) I went from having everything I could have ever dreamed about to having nothing at all in the blink of an eye. I felt so worthless and I cant provide for my family now all because I tried to do what was right by serving my country. I have been so screwed over by the government and military, I just don't know what to do anymore. I have 3 children and an awesome wife who stands by me and helps/ provides for me everyday yet I can't do anything for her. I feel like I deserve this not just for me but for my family. Everyday is a struggle for me and it is making it hard on my family and my children who should be able to count on me but they can't.
