I am being medically retired with 9 years TIS. I was under the impression I can transfer my benefits to my wife but my career counselor is telling me no. Is that correct and if it is will there be any other education benefits for my spouse maybe from the VA? Thanks

I know before it used to be either you had to have minimum 10 years in and it was like a reenlistment incentive so you had to do it at the beginning of another enlistment or you were being forced out and thus couldn't reenlist anymore

They won't let you do it while you are in MEB. I did mine before my MEB process starts. By Army regulation, once you transfer it you incur additional 4 years of service but the regulation is silence on anyone going through an MEB. You might need to seek further guidance from education counselors.

Here's a link to the VA page regarding transfers, the way I read it, if you had at least 6 and signed up for 4 more you could transfer the benefits, or if you had 10 already.

Before you give up on it, I would suggest you go ahead and apply to have it transferred and see if it gets approved, or if denied they give you a reason based on the regulations and/or VA policies.

If you are lucky enough to get the benefits transferred, there's a chance that they would still take them back for your use if you go into the VA's Voc-Rehab program. They might let your wife keep them, but that might depend on if she's already using them by the time you apply for Voc-Rehab.

Hope this helps...

I was able to transfer my 9/11 Bill benefits to my wife. I just went online and to the portal on milconnect and did the transfer. Once I received my orders, I sent a copy up to the POC on milconnect showing a medical separation (I separated not med-retired) and they adjusted my service obligation date to the day prior to my discharge. My family gets VA ed benefits (I am 100% VA) but the living stipend for my area is greater with the 9/11 bill so she is using that currently.
