Indeed, the amount that each SSA SSDI recipient receives on a monthly basis is based upon an average of that individual's previous earnings. As such, the calculation is based on the average indexed monthly earnings (AIME) which is used to calculate the primary insurance amount (PIA).

Moreover, it's important to note that Social Security disability entitlement "freezes" Social Security earnings records during a person's period of disability so that reduced earnings during a period of disability will not have an adverse effect on retirement benefits. That said, the resulting benefits computation may raise, but will not lower, future Social Security retirement benefits. ;)

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

there is an esitmator on the SSI website, go to "My Social Security" sign up for an account, log in and there will be a retirement and a disability (SSDI) amount listed based on your salary history.

I have looked at that but was curious as to if the used your BASE PAY i.e. your yearly w2 wages, (which is far less than total earnings) or your total earnings Base+BAS+BAH and other pays for the year?

Based off taxed pay, which would be base pay, not BAS or BAH.

They go by the WAGES you were social Security taxed on.

BAH does NOT count - only SSA taxed wages will count.

You best bet for your estimate is to use your wage statements you get every year for your Fed income tax filings.

Use just your wages earned - not your BAH - just the wages that were taxed for SSA.

Hello, sorry for hijacking your thread. I am currently in the MEB process and just signed my NARSUM on 1-JUN, I would like to know if I can file for SSDI now or should I wait until I am found unfit? Thanks

As a general rule, you can file as soon as you get a MEB profile. The rules state that its related to you being removed from gainful employment. I.e. your profile caused your job to be changed, generally to a busy work/go to medical appointments/stay out of hair style position.

I ended up filling out the online form on the SSA site and hand carried all my medical documents that is being used for my MEB to my local office today.
