I was recently contacted by the PDBR and advised that I was medically retired at 40%. I was initially MEB out at 10%. I submitted may PDBR packet in September 2013 and I was given my results in August 2015, 23 months later. I am currently a temporary 100% with the VA and my next routine Future exam is July 2016. For the information that I have read it doesn't seem as if a will be given any retro and also will have waive my retirement.

This is the only question I have, when I began getting compensation I was only receiving 10% I appealed that decision and was awarded 20%. If my compensation was less for some years can VA compensation be waived for the my first few years of compensation?

When were you separated? Waiving your retirement is good thing as it is replaced by tax free VA. Do you have any combat related condition being compensated by the VA?

I was separated in July 2004. My conditions was not combat related. I began having seizures while deployed to Iraq.

YouR VA was offset to the amount of your DoD disability separation pay. This is normal. Now that your retired, they are suppose to figure out what you should have been paid had you been retired all along and pay you the difference, if any. Be aware of the retiree survivor benefit option. They will charge you premiums back to 2004. You need to consider this in you SBP decision.

Hello guys. I am awaiting the decision from my pdbr adjudication I was seperated in 2005 with 10% from the Army and 80% from the VA from an IED while on patrol in Iraq.PTSD/Back problems/Scar on face and burn on face. I was wounded in the line of duty in combat. I submitted my pdbr packet in 2013 and it has finally reached the adjudication stage. When the pdbr contacted you was it by letter ? Like fed ex or something ? I'm hoping this doesn't take too much longer anyone have an example of a good pdbr timeline ?

Thanks Mike

So you recommend that I don't take survivor benefits option. At the time of discharge I was not married but I had a 7 year old child but in 2008 I got married and had 2 more children. What is the best option for me?

The first response I received was a phone call and the guy ask for my DD214 and my discharge orders. He also stated that he needed this information to retire me. He did not disclose my rating. About 2 weeks later I received my letter stating that I was re-characterized from 10% to 40%.

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

Indeed, congratulations on your recent receipt of approval for military disability retirement via the PDBR! :D

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

This is a very complex issue. I doubt you will actually receive DoD retirement pay due to the offset of your VA compensation from the 100% rating. You need to explore commercial life insurance options, especially a term life option. You also want to consider a SBP child only option. Bottom line: if you have family members who are dependent on your DoD/VA compensation, you need to have a plan to replace that income in the event of your death. SBP may or may not be the best option. The devil will be in the details. Please be aware that any option to take less than full spousal SBP coverage is actually the sole decision of your spouse so make sure your spouse is well versed in your options and their pros and cons.

Thanks bro and again congrats on your retirement !!!

Went to ebenefits this morning and requested a copy of OMPF and my DD215 was in my records. Were do I go from here? I live in Jackson, MS which there are no military bases. I called National guard retirement NCO and he wasn't much help. I don't think that many people here in this area has been through the PDBR process because my POA with the DAV had never heard about the PDBR. Long story short who do I talk contact to give me more information on retirement because at this point I'm still in the dark just a little.

From what I've been told today, because I'm a medical retiree with less than 20 years and also 100% with non-combat related injuries I will not be given a retirement check my retirement will offset my VA compensation dollar for dollar. I am eligible for Tricare but DEERs was not updated so Tricare could not verify me so I was listed as not eligible. I went to ebenefits and was able to get a copy of my DD215 that showed PDRl. Still have not received orders. I will keep you guys posted of the process post PDBR.

Found some good information and good phone numbers for question relating to medical retirement thru the PDBR.

Well my PDBR was received on May 6, 2014, so i am going on 20 months and am still being told its in review and adjudication. I was also told it should only take around 15 months. But that is obviously false, wish they would tell me something soon

Received my orders 2 days ago, but I was not updated in DEERs to show retiree. I'm a resident of Jackson, MS and its not very many military installation in this area. It's a Air Force national guard unit here that was listed as a ID issuing site. I called and ask could they update my records in DEERs and the young lady told me that because they are Air Force and I was Army they wasn't unable to update my records. So I called Fort Polk DEERs office and I was told that the information I was provided was not correct. Long story short here in MS there is not many people that has been through the PDBR process and the education on it is very limited. I also called Tricare and they wasn't able to give me any information because of the my DEERs information. Plan to go have all my dependents added to DEERs today and contact Tricare. Will keep you guys updated on the status.

Records was updated in DEERs and instantly I was eligible for Tricare. My eligibility was retro 2009 not 2004 as my retirement was. I'm in the process of filing claims for outstanding balances for medical services for my children, we will see how that go.

I don't know how this process will go for me I am reading these forums and getting a little discouraged. My case I was med boarded out of Active duty in July of 2005 after falling out of a barracks attic on 1st Sgt detail storing barracks supplies the ceiling gave way. I was med boarded with the Diagnosis of (low back strain) that's it never mind how they ignored the fact that now my rib cage and both scapular were now rubbing and grating when i breathed. Needless to say after complaining many years and almost coming to fist blows with a VA Doctor over my issues. I went through my physician through my insurance at my civ job. I got referred to a orthopedic surgeon and a rheumatologist. I had after MRI's and CT scans cervical spondylitis, 2 bulging disc in sacrolumbar, degenerative joint disease with never impingement, as well as fibromyalgia. I submitted this to the VA I was awarded 60 percent SC with back pay from March til October time frame. Now when discharged from active duty I was made to receive severance pay because twice the decision was rebutted by me because I was aware of the 30 percent but after it came back after the 2nd rebuttal the peblo officer made me take it. He said I had to sign for just the 10. I sent in my PDBR paperwork in last September the VA just increased my SC from 60 to 80 percent from two claims I had in May of 2015. Now they told me that The military in lieu of compensation on ebenefits that means I have to repay 9000 of my severance. What I don't understand is why did they not take that when I was awarded the 60 percent last year? As far as this PDBR I am so confused as to how this mess works with me being 80 percent SC now and possible retirement it's just overwhelming. I am at the point now it's like whatever. It took 9 years just to get the 60 percent so nothing surprises me

Keep fighting the good fight Brother we are all in this together !!!!! I'm awaiting adjudication on from the pdbr myself. I submitted my packet in October of 2013 now I'm awaiting the adjudication decision. I have no idea who to contact or how long this takes but I'm seeing ppl with PTSD cases take longer.

I was discharged from the army as a airborne infantryman and served in Afghanistan and Iraq.I was med boarded out October 2006 at 10% and labeled as major depressive disorder but all of my medical file said ptsd as well as a outside hospital and military psych doctors that stated that in my medical file. The va initially rated me at 30 percent in 2007 then moved it up to 70% in 2008 and then 100% in 2010 total and permanent. I filed with an attorney from lawyers serving warriors filed at the beginning of this year for medical retirement. I served a total of 5 years and if approved will I qualify for crsc and cdrp? My severance has already been recouped years ago will it be returned since mine is combat related and will I get anything additional as a retirement pay ? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
