In Feb 2016 I had a lumbar nerve simulator implanted due to years of lower back pain (degenerative arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, degenerative disc disease, lumbar stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and bulging disc). Below is my timeline once I was identified by my DAWG as requiring a RILO.

14 March 16 - Notified by PEBLO that RILO recommended a full MEB
4 April 16 - Met with VA rep to start claim filing process
26 April 16 - VA audiogram and lab appts
2 May 16 - VA C&P Examination
16 May 16 - Signed AF618 referring decision to IPEB (Diagnosis: Implantation of Nerve Simulator)
25 May 16 - Package submitted/accepted to AFPC
31 May 16 - eBenefits updated status to "Under Review"

One caveat to this process is that I have been in the Air Force for 19 years and 5 months. I am hoping that the whole thing drags out until I hit 20 so I can receive my AF retirement in conjunction with my VA benefits. Wish me luck!

I will post updates as they occur.

Goodluck!

Our timelines are almost identical. I'm also at Eielson. Anxious to see how it plays out. I have been checking Ebenefits 3 times a day but it still says gathering of evidence. I bet you can drag it out to 20 if they don't just return you to duty presuming you are just going to retire at 20. I would save all your leave, never know when a day or two can get you over the hump when combined with convalescent. Good Luck!

New status update, "Pending Decision Approval" in eBenefits as of 11 June. Seems like the process is moving fairly quickly for me at the moment.

So new update, I received my ratings on 22 Jun and an very surprised how quick the process went. Actually, it went way too fast due to the fact that I needed this to stretch out so I could hit 20 years. That is still my goal but I'm not sure if the appeals process will help in stretching it. As far as my ratings go, I am very happy. I was offered 40% AF and 80% VA. The thing I will be appealing will be that my initial back injury happened during a deployment. It was not in combat but in a hazardous/combat zone. I am afraid that they may try and screw me over not only on the 20 year retirement (which means I'll lose CDRP) but that they may try and lower my ratings. This is all new to me and I will be contacting my lawyer tomorrow to see the best course of action. I have found that I am not eligible for the LAS program because I'm over 19 years. Feedback from anyone with any insight or information similar to my situation is much appreciated!

How close are you to your 20 year mark? I would start adding up your leave/permissive TDY and count the days backwards from the 20 year mark. This will give you an idea of how much longer you need to fight to reach the 20 year mark.

Right now I'm 185 days away from reaching my 20 year mark...I have 60 days of leave and 30 days PTDY (already approved by my Commander) and hopefully I don't receive a court date until the end of August. I am scraping by here to lengthen this process out.....I may make it by the skin of my teeth!

You would think you are somewhat protected by lengthy service consideration? Also, if you are within one year why don't you just apply for retirement?

The sanctuary standards that used to exist do not anymore. I cannot apply for retirement because I am coded. The regulation states that you are not eligible to retire if you are in the MEB process.

I was notified last week that an MEB will be started on me as well. I'm at 19 yrs and 1 month. Please keep us updated with your progress!! I'm hoping to stretch mine out 11 more months to hit the 20 yr mark. Really hoping it will be possible!

I think you will be covered. It took me 3 months to get a FPEB date from my lawyer. It seems like you only needed to stretch it out 90 days or so before you hit your window. After you meet the FPEB (depending on outcome) at a minimum you would still have to wait for orders and then add another 20 days for out processing. It seems like you are safe now, but I would be careful posting on these forums about just wanting to stretch your timeline out. They will brief you when you get there that the FPEB can use social media in determining the outcome of your case.

Same base, same problems here. How were the va exams? Feel like you got short changed on rom or anything? I just started the process and am already impatient with it.

It is especially painful now that the PEBLO has changed a few times in the past 2 months.

Oh god, I feel your pain. Can't imagine being in the middle and dealing with it. I am beyond annoyed at the mdg for that

I'm at EAFB also. I have my first PEBLO meeting tomorrow. I hope my timeline is as fast as yours (there is a new PEBLO now).
