Severance Pay vs TDRL

Hello Everyone,

I have a question in regards to TDRL and Separation Pay that may be odd just to even ask it but bare with me for a second.

Is it possible for a Service Member that was found unfit for duty and proposed ratings are over 30% DoD and VA, to opt or request somehow to instead of being put on the TDRL, receive a medical separation pay?

PS.
I know that its not ideal and on the long run its better to shoot for the retirement (benefits, id card, etc)

You don't have a choice. If your 30% or more then you will be retired.

I'm really confused. Why would you want a severance vs a check every month for the rest of your life?

I would encourage you to consult with some educated financial/legal professionals before trying to influence a decision towards separation pay vs. retirement.

I used to diligently max out my Roth IRA every year, however, since I left the .mil my monthly personal retirement savings (Roth IRA etc) have dwindled to almost nothing & I was concerned about not being where I need to be for my age. My peers have much larger retirement accounts than I do. I consulted with a financial advisor and asked him to approximate what my retirement & tricare is worth in a lump sum amount; it's easier to gauge that way when you are when comparing apples to apples.

Considering the monthly pay with annual COLA increases, Tricare, survivors benefits etc. he estimated the package worth well into the 7 figures. In other words to buy an annuity that starts paying immediately, gets annual COLA increases, provides survivor's benefits, and access to good healthcare I would have to write a huge check. Now I don't feel so bad about my lacking Roth IRA account.

Of course everyone's retirement package is going to vary based on their age, pay grade, rating etc but please make sure you have the whole picture in regards to the two options. Depending on your situation maybe you need that lump sum up front but doing a couple of consults can't hurt anything.

I could not agree more.

If I were to be severed I would get $197,400. If I only got 30% I'd get $1,895 monthly. After 104 months (8.6 years) everything after that would be above and beyond that $197,400.

I plan on living more than 8.6 years.

So my Peblo calls me today and says I'm Unfit with DOD 10% w/severance and VA 70%. Do I appeal or just sign the shit and be on my way?

If you wanted to be on your way, you can be on your way.
