Ramstein LDES Timeline

I'm in a unique situation, see below:

Shortly after I sent my package to AFPC in May 2022 (maybe a month later), I was returned to duty with an assignment limitation code (ALC) and a cross-training notification. I wasn't really interested in cross-training so I just punched (voluntary separation), did my BDD VA exams, and am now on terminal leave. I've moved from my assignment area, have a new job, and settled nicely into my post-military life (I've been on terminal for over a month). My current DOS is 17 Feb.

Well, the Ramstein PEBLO just reached out to me last week after completing my ARILO and said that "AFPC noticed that you "declined" the cross-training offer, and would thus like to offer you a full MEB if you return to duty and go into Med hold".... What??!! Mind you, I now have a great job and my previous assignment was in Germany.

So, my commander just approved a modified scheduled, remote work, and a second job for me so that I don't have to quit my new job (which I was very lucky to get in the first place) while I undergo the MEB process. I'll be working my new job during the day, and remote working, doing administrative tasks and such on nights and weekends throughout the duration of this LDES process. I elected LDES given my situation because I need to move it along as fast as possible. After talking to the PEBLO, they believe that they could complete the process within 1-2 months.

My entire timeline is below:

Ramstein AFB / Chronic Meniscus Tear w/ severe arthritis

2022
Apr 26th - Code 37 Initiated
May 13th - CC impact statement submitted (Do not retain)
May 16th - NARSUM
May 17th - Package sent to AFPC
June 6th - Return to duty with assignment limitation code and cross-training notice

2023
Jan 24 - ARILO initiates full MEB
Jan 27 - ODC recommends LDES
Jan 31 - Returned to duty for med hold from terminal leave/LDES initiated

I'll post updates along the way! We sent a request to expedite so I'm hopeful for a quick process!!

Consolidated:

2022

6 Feb - IMR/DAF 618 returned to PEBLO (referred to IPEB)
8 Feb - FSS Notification that package was received

Hoping to hear back w/ ratings by the 17th (coincidentally, my original DOS before the MEB was offered)

For those that are considering LDES to speed up their timelines, I was rated 10% DOD by sticking with LDES and listing only one issue, and 100% VA after doing my own claim. I ended up keeping my severance because my disqualifying DOD rating did not impact my total VA rating. Just throwing that out as something to keep in mind. It doesn't always work-out this way, but each circumstance is unique, and it's worth consideration if you're in a similar situation as I was.

Glad you got what you wanted! Below are the trade offs for anyone considering between the 2 options for obtainable goals.

With separation with severance you can't qualify for CRSC which may be substantial if you were in for a long time. You can't get Tricare free for you and your dependents. There is no floor for VA compensation. VA compensation can max out but can also go as low as zero as VA compensation can change at anytime if your ratings change. A chapter 61 retirement guarantees a fixed income for life therefore ensuring a minimum compensation amount each month. There are a few other minor differences but the ones listed above are the big ones.

what about collecting money from the VA after accepting Separation payments? I thought i read that the VA will recoup the separation payment before paying VA payments.

Not in all situations. If the unfitting condition was designated as combat related by the PEB or if the SM would have a 0% ratings or 100% ratings even without the unfitting condition's rating calculated into the equation.
