Medically retired vs statutory retirement?

What is the advantage of a Medical retirement over a 20 year statutory retirement. I am an AGR SM with 20 years and I am being considered for MEDBOARD. I have a P3 permenant profile for PTSD and a pending LOD from a vehicle accident where I have suffered a reconstructed knee, Plates and pins in my pelvis, and buldgeing disk in my back. Just curious why I shouldn't just drop my 4187 and retire instead on waiting on the Medboard????

The least stressful way would be to see if they can let you just retire.

-The only 2 ways to net more compensation from a medical retirement in your situation. Number 1 is having a higher DOD% than your earned longevity (50% legacy or 40% blended) & having less than 50% VA rating. That is because if you don't have at least 50% VA ratings then you can't get both your retirement and VA compensation at the same time. It sounds like you will have a 50% or higher VA rating though so that wouldn't help you.

-The 2nd way to net more compensation compared to a regular retirement with CRDP is if your DOD% is higher than regular retired % earned which is typically 50% or 40% if blended AND one of your unfitting conditions was designated by the PEB as combat related. If you met those 2 conditions then your chapter 61 pension would be exempt from federal income taxes which wouldn't be the case for a regular retirement. There are a few other perks of a medical retirement such as having the annual family enrollment fee waived for Tricare select ($300 annual savings) but that's about it.

My PTSD should be combat related and yes I have many more medical conditions I'll be 100% VA no doubt.

Then I would go MEB route. PTSD is almost always TDRL so just be prepared for that then.
