Hey all, I trying to discuss the options a friend of mine has as far as an MEB is concerned. We are both agr with less than 20 years AFS. I have started the MEB process and he just got his first P3 profile signature and is currently awaiting the second. He is wanting to resign his AGR position and go back to M-day and have them MEB him from the M-Day side. Would he lose any benefits if he did this? I am trying to help him with this decision and he is concerned that he will lose out on civilian job opportunities if he does the MEB through the AGR side. I understand his plight but I don't want him to make a bad decision that will affect his future. Thanks in advance!

Please let him know that he would be making a HUGE mistake going that route! He needs to stay AGR and go through the MEB. I know things suck but don't do it! My wife ended up getting medically retired at 17 AFS with 20 good years as an AGR. She wanted to quit everyday. The peer pressure sucks too! There are only a handful of AGR spots so if you can't pull your weight then it makes everything harder for the unit but this is the one instance where you need to take care of yourself. Your Guard unit wants everyone to contribute but frankly they don't give a crap about you or anyone else. Tell your friend he needs to think about his financial future.
How many good years does he have? If he has 15 good years or more at the very worst situation he will still get to retire at age 60 if he was unable to get rated 30% DOD to medically retire immediately.
I just sent you some attorneys for him to reach out and interview. Getting a dedicated private IDES attorney to help at the beginning of the process is a game changer. They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for. Personally, I wouldn't trust my financial future to a free service where JAG has way to many cases to help Soldiers get the best result for each and every situation.
Even with 13 good years depending on how close to 14 he might be able to hit 15 years. None of that matters if his unfitting condition or conditions total 30%. If that happens he retires now and gets a pension and tricare for the rest of his life!
