I recently discovered a lawsuit by some civilians against the makers of Seroquel that went to settlement in the early 2000s. I know a lot of Soldiers were prescribed the antipsychotic Seroquel (or generic, Quetiapine) for off-label use, so I became curious if any of us might be experiencing similar issues as those civilians. I also recently read a 2010s memo from MEDCOM directing providers to stop prescribings antipsychotics off-label because a metastudy on a similar antipsychotic showed it did more harm than good. I wonder how many people in this forum were prescribed Seroquel (or generic Quetiapine) and then had blood sugar problems (including prediabetes, diabetes, hypoglycemia, Type II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance)? Please vote if you're willing.

Excerpt from MEDCOM policy:

Para 7.f.(5).(b). Paraphrase: Atypical antipsychotics (used off-label) often provide more harm than benefit, including weight gain, glucose dysregulation, and extrapyramidal side effects. While Quetiapine has not undergone the same rigorous testing as Risperidone (D-level rating for PTSD), they carry similar clinical concerns.

"I know a lot of soldiers were prescribed the antipsychotic Seroquel for off-label use". How do you know this? And what is "a lot"?

It was mentioned as a standard practice in the MEDCOM policy that doctors were adopting from civilian doctors. It was also mentioned in the Seroquel lawsuit that the maker recommended off-label use to civilian doctors. Finally, it was mentioned to me as “something we used to do” by a BH provider with whom I was discussing my medical history.

I don’t know what “a lot” is, but from the MEDCOM policy, it seemed like “if antidepressants weren’t working, just add an antipsychotic” was a standard practice that they later warned against.
