I have a friend who's husband was medically separated back in August. The army gave him no rating, while the VA gave him a total rating of 80% for I believe 3 conditions. He only had 1 unfitting condition and was in a total of 3 years . They will still receive insurance from the military though. Well it's Humana and they will pay $500 something a year for all 4 of them. I'm confused to how they have that but he wasn't retired.

You get 180 days of Tricare if you are medically separated, but I have never heard of what you mentioned. That would be cheaper than tricare is what i got for retirement. I think they are tracking something wrong.

I knew about the 180 days of tricare if you are medically separated. I was just puzzled about what they said. There is probably more to it then what he is letting her know. He doesn't like to tell her things. I was just wondering if it was possible.

If you are severanced from active duty you do not get tricare for life-with the 80% there may be some chapter benefits through the va for insurance i have not memorized all of those rules yet.

You as the service member will be covered by the VA, but the VA does not cover the family members. You will have to find an insurance plan to cover family members after the 180 days. That is going to be based on what everybody else pays for insurance.

He could be referring to CHCBP, which is covered through Humana Military

Tricare south region is also part of the Humana family. It is possible that he was medically retired and didn't explain it or is unaware. The $500 a year would make sense with Tricare Prime enrollment.

I'm wondering if he is retired and doesn't know it also. They are in the south now, living in Florida. I have asked her several times if she is sure with how much they pay and she said yes. I just remember them saying the army gave him nothing except offered to give him $100 and something a month or he could choose what the VA gave him. If the army gave him nothing then why would they be offereing anything? Also, something that caught my attention was if they gave him a 0% rating then why didnt he get severance pay?
