Hi everyone,

I am being med-boarded, and just waiting on ratings at this point. I am expecting somewhere between 70-100%.

Are you allowed to file for state disability income in addition to the VA disability? If so, is there anything specific to know or that you wish you knew?

State: Arizona
Active Duty Army

Thank you.

I found out a few weeks ago from a buddy who is on SSDI (retired Army) that you can actually apply for it while you are on active duty, to then receive it once you get out. I guess they streamline the process or at least give it more attention or active duty. Doesn't mean it gets approved, but at least you will get attention. I don't even think you need to be in a MEB status. I read through it and I plan to attempt to apply for it while going through the MEB. I think you can just google SSDI apply while on active duty. Good luck, let us know how the process goes.

I have been trying to read up on it as much as possible, and from what I can tell it seems like you need your DD-214 (at least for the state of Arizona). But, I do think you are correct. You get your DD-214, and then go on terminal leave (usually 30-60 days), during this period is when you would actually apply for it. You'd then be eligible to collect it once you are officially finished with terminal leave.

*This is just my interpretation from what I have been reading about Arizona military benefits. I could be totally wrong. Feel free to correct any mistakes. Thanks!

Expedited claim is if you get 100% VA. But this link has some good info.

Thanks so much! Will be doing further research now. All of this is new to me. I am still awaiting my ratings to come back, so I am just trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces on the civilian side once I get out.

I'll also add that it is specifically 100% P&T, not just 100% VA. Here is some more information for those interested: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10565.pdf

My wife applied for SSDI while going through IDES. It took several years but when approved at the ALJ stage they approved her and backdated it to the time she served and was no longer able to work. So you can apply for SSDI right now. However, SSDI standards are much higher than PEB. They require that you are so disabled that you can't do any job at all.

Thanks for the great information. I need to wait for my ratings which should be coming back this month. Fingers crossed.

You are welcome! Your ratings with the VA and or PEB will have absolutely no bearing on if you are approved for SSDI. My wife is bedridden for half the month. That is why she was approved for SSDI. She couldn't hold any job because of how many days she is unavailable to work in a given month.

Thank you.
Alright, headed for that sweet med-board exit, just waiting on the VA to drop those ratings (aiming for that 70-100% gold). Big question: Can you double-dip with Arizona state disability on top of that VA cheddar? Any AZ vets out there got the inside scoop? Anything you wish you knew before you filed? Hit a brother up. Army, out.

I know you can for SSDI. My wife is on SSDI and VA disability + her chapter 61 pension.
