Thanks for providing the timeline. I am interested to hear about your experience, as I am in a similar situation and time frame. Are you plus or minus 20 years of service? What are your expectations?

Pretty easy process, I’d say the worst part was waiting for anything with the VA. It’s well worth downloading and using the VA app to track the claims process. Otherwise everything was timely. My discharge date is May 7th (2 months from when they received my DA199 response)

Forgot to mention I’m under 20 years.

If you’re borderline like I was, make sure you know if you want to stay in, get out, and if you get out if you’re going to try for medical retirement. Whatever you choose to do, look up the VA disability rating definitions for your injuries.

The wording that your practitioners use in your appointment summaries/DBQs is based off those definitions and you will get that set percentage. So it’s very important you pay attention to what you say in those appointments or to be honest with your ROM for what you feel you can actually do, because some practitioners will try to convince you to do more on those range of motion measurements which can bite you in the a** later during the rating process.

This isn’t advice to try to milk the VA/military for money or benefits, but make sure you take care of yourself and don’t try to make your injuries less than what they are, because it all affects a big decision that will affect the rest of your life and you can’t go backwards with the military once the PEB process is over unless you’re found fit for duty and can start it all over again.

Good information, thank you for the recommendations. I entered this process sort of "backwards" by filing a VA Claim after coming off of a mobilization and needing some medical care. So, I did receive a VA rating and decision then subsequently entered into the MEB, currently in the PEB phase. I am over 20 years of service, with over 10 years of that active (Active Duty, Deployments, and Mobilizations combined). Hoping for the process to end before August 2023.

Sounds like your journey is near the end, so good on you!
