Asthma and biologics

This is not totally true. As of 2024, there are only 6 biologics used to treat asthma. xolair, nucala, fasenra, cinqair, dupixent and tezspire. As someone stated above, the va is all about following the rating criteria.

Out of the 6 biologics, only one is listed as an "immune suppressant" drug classification on the va formulary advisor (resource the va uses to search for formulary drug info) - which is xolair. The other 5 are listed under drug class "anti-asthma", "respiratory agent" and "dermotologicals".

I've only seen one or two BVA cases (which you shouldn't quote in your appeals/hlr to the va since every case is different) that granted 100% due to use of biologic. And that was due to xolair.

Im currently in the beginning stages of the MEB for asthma and Im on nucala so hopefully they change their ways.

I hear you but haven't seen any cases where tezpsire was used. It is classified as an immunosuppresant. I have a board hearing soon so we will see.

It is non formulary as is nucala however both are immunosuppresants. All nonformulary means is that it is not covered under va pharmacies. FASENRA isn't an immunosuppresant.

I provided the VA formulary advisor because this is what the VA uses to determine the drug class of a medication. Only Xolair is listed as an "immune suppressant". That is the only asthma biologic listed as an immune suppressant. Tezspire says "Drug Class: ANTIASTHMA,OTHER".

I want you to be right trust me. Im going through the process as well. I would love to get 100% from using a biologic. But I've probably asked maybe 15-20 people who use biologics monthly about their rating and none of them have said 100% for asthma. On google, only 1/2 cases (from the board VA, which could take up to 4 years to approve AND are all different) have been awarded 100% from biologics. And both were using xolair. But I hope you get 100% for your tezspire.

I see your point but the other might be the immunosuppresant. I have waited almost 4 years I have also seen nucala award 100 percent and these are cases where the vet was taking xolair previously and Thank you I hope so to
