I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder Recurrent Severe as well as Anxiety Disorder NOS, with R/O PTSD. I was given a temp 90 day profile but when I looked at the notes/records from BH it states that “SM Does Not Meet Retention Standards for Continued Service.” Whats next, has anyone out there been in this situation that could shed some light! I am going to an inpatient residential program for 30 days. What may happen after that!

Treatment proceeds evaluation for retention. I wish you the best during your inpatient time. It can be time of great growth. Best wishes. Mike

I know that they normally want you to go through treatment first prior to determining fit or unfit but I was just wondering why that statement was listed right off the bat.

Are you Active Duty? I have seen some strange things lately that I wish I could speak to. My understanding is that the BH provider gave their professional opinion. Because mental health is something that can have a chance to be short-term and heal, my guess is they are going to continue to re-evaluate as they treat you. I am a Reservist so I can’t say for sure, but I have heard on the RC side that once you complete a year of profiles they then consider things permanent/chronic, and maybe then you will be referred to the MEB. Right now, an AD infantry guy I know is going through a lot of outpatient appts., group therapy, etc. He clearly needs to be medically retired ASAP but from what we’re gathering just by our own personal experiences, it seems the Army will first see if they can heal and retain you, part of this is good because they are trying to take responsibility to take care of you, doing all they know to do before you become the responsibility of the VA if you don’t heal. I imagine, again if you are AD, and I’m sorry I don’t know what branch you are, that once/if you are issued a permanent P3 profile, then the referral to the MEB is triggered. Best thing to do right now is find your local branch Ombudsman who willl know the ins and outs of what’s happening, what it means, and what should happen.

I agree with ChaplainCharlie too... embrace this time to find healing and delve into the issues you would not have time for otherwise. Many people do not get the opportunity you have before you, that is, hoping you have good providers. My AD buddy I mentioned does. When he actually listens and participates, he does better.

That connection with a provider has proven over and again the key to great therapy.
