Bipolar II Pilot IDES Timeline

Well I totally misheard my PEBLO. I thought he said fifty days to out process, but he actually said FIFTEEN. AFPC called today to ask me about my separation worksheet, which I wrote with 50 days in mind. They clarified the error and I’ll be getting my orders next week, with a separation date in the near future!
I thought that sounded a bit weird, but yeah if you want to take 20days PTDY and all your terminal leave you’ll be out the door pretty fast. Got my orders on the March 10th and should final out April 1st.

I’m not moving though, so I’m pretty sure I don’t get permissive TDY right?

Probably not as it’s intended to be used “for a pre-separation or retirement relocation activity such as job or residence search”. Kind of a little vague but I guess it’s ultimately up to your CC.

Yeah I know well enough not to ask for that, my CC has already hooked me up enough during this whole process. Also I'm not moving, so... yeah.

Congratulations on your ratings! We seem to have a similar timeline. I hope you get your orders soon:)

Why not ask for the PTDY, it’s paid time that will help in your transition. If your commander has been supportive I bet he/she approves it. The worst that can happen is they say no.

I just requested it today!

Retirement Orders received. DOS 22 Jun and that includes PTDY!

Not normal at all. Get up to speed on mental health DBQs and the VA criteria.

General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders:

Total occupational and social impairment, due to such symptoms as:
gross impairment in thought processes or communication;
persistent delusions or hallucinations; grossly inappropriate
behavior; persistent danger of hurting self or others; intermittent
inability to perform activities of daily living (including maintenance
of minimal personal hygiene); disorientation to time or place; memo
loss for names of close relatives, own occupation, or own name 100%

Occupational and social impairment, with deficiencies in most areas,
such as work, school, family relations, judgment, thinking, or mood,
due to such symptoms as: suicidal ideation; obsessional rituals
which interfere with routine activities; speech intermittently illogical,
obscure, or irrelevant; near-continuous panic or depression affecting
the ability to function independently, appropriately and effectively;
impaired impulse control (such as unprovoked irritability with periods
of violence); spatial disorientation; neglect of personal appearance and
hygiene; difficulty in adapting to stressful circumstances (including
work or a worklike setting); inability to establish and maintain
effective relationships 70%

Occupational and social impairment with reduced reliability and
productivity
due to such symptoms as: flattened affect; circumstantial,
circumlocutory, or stereotyped speech; panic attacks more than once
a week; difficulty in understanding complex commands; impairment
of short- and long-term memory (e.g., retention of only highly learned
material, forgetting to complete tasks); impaired judgment; impaired
abstract thinking; disturbances of motivation and mood; difficulty in
establishing and maintaining effective work and social relationships 50%

Occupational and social impairment with occasional decrease in work
efficiency and intermittent periods of inability to perform occupational
tasks
(although generally functioning satisfactorily, with routine
behavior, self-care, and conversation normal), due to such symptoms
as: depressed mood, anxiety, suspiciousness, panic attacks (weekly or
less often), chronic sleep impairment, mild memory loss (such as
forgetting names, directions, recent events) 30%

Occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms
which decrease work efficiency and ability to perform occupational
tasks only during periods of significant stress, or; symptoms controlled
by continuous medication 10%

A mental condition has been formally diagnosed, but symptoms are not
severe enough either to interfere with occupational and social
functioning or to require continuous medication0%
If I had the 50% box checked on my PTSD screening but they also diagnosed me with major depressive disorder, would I still only get 50%, or would they compound the two into one rating?

Yeah, it'll just be lumped into one rating.

I will not be going to grad school after all :( and so will be applying for SSDI, anyone have any pointers for that?

Be ready for a long wait and get a lawyer to help you if needed (one that takes a percentage of your backpay if you win). I applied in September with the help of a lawyer and am still waiting for a determination. It’s much harder to qualify for versus the VA so I’m not really holding my breath.

Yep! What @randomairman27 said. My wife applied August 2021 but didn't get paperwork finished to complete application until December 2021. SSA is terrible. My wife has an attorney. It's a must! I expect her to be denied and she will have to appeal to get it. Apply and fight for it if you deserve it but know its a long tough road to get approved for most.

well damn. That's a little disheartening but then again, I will be just sitting at home, so why not?

If you are not going to grad school , you could always get a job instead

Believe it or not, there is more out there than just SDDI and the veteran game

hahaha you’re right of course, I just hope that my interview with the application panel is not indicative of my future employment applications. It really bums me out because I thought I could leverage this separation into an awesome second career (predicated on this specific program) and I just always assumed I’d be accepted because why wouldn’t they want a former military officer as a student? It’s too late to apply to other programs for this fall, I think my ego really got me good

I think I’m just wallowing in my own muddy pity party because I didn’t get what I wanted and now I need to figure out something new for at least this next year. There are so many job opportunities in my area, I just have to pick the right one in the right field that’ll boost my chances of being accepted next year

Yeah, it is a tough transition. Best of luck. Keep your head up. I struggled for a few months finding a new identity besides a former army guy with a disability check. It is easy to fall back onto that but look at it as an opportunity and not a reason to identify as a " disabled veteran". The amount of times I have been asked about my former job or war...zero......

That’s one of the hardest parts of this… no one cares about the plane I flew… or the missions… or the hours… or any of the things that I thought were important. My first draft of my resume was a complete mess and looks nothing like my current one, that was a tough humbling pill to swallow
