What is this box all about, is it saying that if they separate me with severance pay that I won't receive it, and only get what VA would pay out?

Mike -

I believe Box 25 of VA 21-526. That box, if checked, basically says you are choosing military retirement pay over VA disability pay. I'm sure Mike or Jason will be able to explain it better, but in most cases you want to leave that box unchecked, as VA disability is tax free.

Thanks dashfan9, sorry I was not specific enough, but it won't affect my severance will it?

It will not affect your severance. However, if you indeed are separated with severance, your VA disability compensation will be affected. You will have to repay the VA the amount you are awarded as compensation from the military. For instance, if you receive $25,000 severance from the military, the VA will recoup $25,000 from your disability payments. This is assuming your conditions are not combat connected. This is how we were briefed at the MEB here, so I apologize if this is incorrect.
