COAD Denial!

Hi,

I saw one of MAPARKER's threads stating that someone with over 18 years was denied a COAD. Can someone explain to me why and how this could happen?

:mad:I thought that if you were over 18 yrs they would support a COAD?

The normal 18 year "santuary" rules do not apply to service members found unfit by a PEB.

If a service member makes it to 20, he becomes eligible for CRDP (concurrent receipt) if his VA rating is 50% or more. This means his DoD retiremnt is no longer offset by his VA compensation. Thus DoD can avoid paying all or most of a disability retirement if they can force the member out short of twenty years.

Although I am early in the MEB process, I did call my branch and asked about a COAD. My branch manager assured me they would let me stay in the Army until I reach 20 years. My branch is 53% short CPTs so they would rather keep me even if I am non deployable. I think anyone in this process that has 17+ years needs to contact their branch manager and explain the situation. Nothing has failed but a try.

It seems that in my situation I do not get along with my Branch manager. Also, I am an E7, not an O3 so I don't think I would get the same level of cooperation. In any event, I will still try when the time comes. I think I will also still try to maximize the process. With my Mother in the hospital with anywhere from weeks to a few months to live, I go back and forth everyday. These are definitely dark days for SFC Skaggs. But thanks for the info and advice, it is not unappreciated.
