Combat related?

I was wondering how the whole combat related thing works

CRSC is a completely separate check that goes off of your DoD % for what was found to be combat related. For example, you get 80% VA and 60% DoD, but only 50% of the DoD rating is combat related, then you can get a check for 50% of your base pay on top of your 80% VA. If you have any questions about CRSC they have a hotline: 1-877-327-4457.

Combat Related means you injury was from direct combat, i.e. IED, gun shot wound, TBI from explosives, and so on.... Occured in a combat zone is a different story... i.e. TBI from blunt force trauma from a fall on a FOB, contracting TB from a interpretor, broken hand from unloading a crate from the back of a truck....

So whatever DOD rates me as combat related I get that check on top of VA since it is combat related? I understand the difference from combat related and occurred in combat. I just don't understand the way it is paid out. I have 5 condition DOD found unfitting, 3 of which got the code for combat related. Ok.... so lets say my base pay is 2000 and DOD rates me at 50% I would get 1000 on top of whatever the VA pays me?

How long does that take? And how do you apply and to whom?

I'm not sure how long the process takes but you would apply to your branch of service. Found this on the dfas website, I hope it helps.

Took me less than 60 days for them to deny me =) well from the Navy side

No, CRSC calculation is not that simple. Using Icepilot's example of ratings 60% DoD and 80% VA, the calculations would work as follows:

1.Total DoD disability retirement= 60% of base pay ($2000)=$1200

2.Minus LOS retirement amount, let's say you have 10ys in so you would calculate as follows: 2.5%x10yrs=25%
25% of $2000=$500
3.So your DoD disability pay will now be $1200-$500=$700

4.VA disability comp for 80% (not counting spouse or children) is $1478 but you would only get paid for 50% which is combat related, so 50%=$797
5. Now your CRSC amount will be VA combat related compensation minus DoD disability pay or $797-$700=$97 CRSC payment
6.Your overall compensation will be $1478+$97=$1575

Hope this helps, and remember, i'm just using hypothetical numbers. Feel free to input the correct numbers so that you can get a more accurate payment amount.

DFAS has a CRSC calculator that I have used. I wasn't sure how accurate it was, but I just ran the same numbers you did and it came out the same. It might be a good tool for those that don't want to do the long-hand;

Good tool eagleone. Although not entirely accurate. My CRSC is off by about $363. Don't know if its because of the calculator or a mistake at DFAS. But good tool nonetheless to get an approximate estimate. ;)

How does it work if I had 12 yrs active, 6 yrs NG and Reserve. I was getting paid for 20 yrs for pay purposes?

Jayson69,
Not sure what the question is. The only thing that counts is time-in-service. Disability retirement is based on either final-pay or highest-36 months. Doesn't matter active or reserve years.

If you have 20-years (combined) active and reserve years AND you qualify for a reserve LOS retirement (last six or eight years in the reserve AND 20 good years), you can get CRSC when you could have been paid your LOS retirement pay.

Does this help?

Per DFAS web page:
To qualify for CRSC you must:
  • be entitled to and/or receiving military retired pay
  • be rated at least 10 percent by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA)
  • be a reservist that is at least 60 years old or retired under Temporary Early Retirement Authorization (TERA)
  • waive your VA pay from your retired pay
  • file a CRSC application with your Branch of Service
Disabilities that may be considered combat related include injuries incurred as a direct result of:
  • Armed Conflict
  • Hazardous Duty
  • An Instrumentality of War
  • Simulated War
Disability retirees with less than 20 years of service will be automatically limited to a retroactive date of January 1, 2008 as required by legislation passed by Congress effective 2008.

I know more money is good either way but the way it seems, you don't actually get that much more.

For some Service Members the combat-related determination the CRSP is the benifit, for others it is the tax-exemption to that part of the disability retirement pay. I asked for an informal reconcideration to include a combat-related designation to five of my claims (50%). I am told there is not a risk to the rest of my claim (70& DoD), but not sure it is really worth it.

yea but is it really that great..I have it on 3 of 5 of my claims from DOD...

Thanks for your service. I hope the above discussion helped. It got me looking at how it affects me, I probably wouldn't have requested the change after looking at the dollar estimates.

I guess I need to rate for my ratings in order to see a difference or to get excited. I mean I have 16 overall but DOD found 5 unfitting, of the 5, 3 are combat related
