Good Morning all,

I am wondering if anybody has had experience being found fit with diagnosis of MDD and PTSD. I have a slew of letters of support from Superiors and Peers as well as my therapist and a second opinion Psychiatrist all in support to find me fit. My situation is unique to an extent and I would like to hear others stories.

I'm going through a mental health MEB as well but for a personality disorder and, while I don't have experience with being found fit, I do remember extensive conversations regarding a very real possibility that I could be. You're already doing all the things that they told me to do (i.e, second opinions, letters from leadership/friends/co-workers/etc.) if I were to try and fight to be found fit for duty. However, that conversation was short-lived as I found myself in the hospital for a week for SI/mania not long after, which meant I had to be on certain medications that weren't allowed for continued service in order to cope with my disorder. At that point, I ruined any chance I had for arguing to be fit for duty.

To my understanding, if you ask for retention in your Commander Impact Statement (CIS) and they agree, your leadership/peers agree, your provider agrees, and you have no behavioral issues at your work center, then you could have a good chance of being retained. Of course AFPC can either agree or disagree with their statements for your retention once your package gets to them, but regardless of their decision you have the right to seek legal counsel and appeal it.

Just remember to be honest with yourself and your providers during this time. Do not sacrifice your well-being and mental health for the sake of staying in.

Many MH conditions, especially those with mild symptoms are returned to duty.

I’ve been through something similar with MDD and PTSD. I had a bunch of letters from my bosses, colleagues, and therapist all saying I was fit for work. It was a real game-changer for me. I made sure to show how I was managing my symptoms and staying on top of my treatment. It’s definitely a tough road, but having that support made a big difference.

Did you end up being found fit without having to go to a FPEB?

I'm facing an IRILO as well for MDD, GAD, and Trauma. Were you referred to MEB then post IRILO or are you just at the step as well? My provider was like, it could go either way. I feel like I've made so much progress in my treatment and am doing my job - home life is still a struggle but I pull it together for work. There has been so little info available on the process or outcomes... it feels like it all takes place in a black box.

I am still awaiting a decision from the PEB but I have done TONS of research. My saving grace is the letter from my provider advocating for me to stay in. Good Luck to you. If you would like any more info, feel free to private message me

How much time do you have in? I was found fit during MEDBOARD because I was within 1 year of my EAOS and eligible for retirement. If that's the case, MEDBOARD will automatically assume you to be fit to continue service.

** Edit to clarify that the above might apply to only Navy/Marines. For me, MEDBOARD referenced SECNAV M-1850, Chapter 4, paragraph 3.g...so other branches might have a different policy.
