Are the seperation codes which are placed in Box 26 of the DD214 standardized across all branches of service? If so, does USN/USMC have a code for "PDRL, Combat-Related Injuries, SimulatingWar"?

-I was medically retired with sep. code "SEJ1".
-Line 13 from my FPEB Findings read - "The disability did not result from a combat related injury as defined by Title 26 U.S. Code Section 104(b)(3).
-My initial appeal to Admin Law was denied due to lack of evidence.

With the help of NVSLP, I applied for and was awarded CRSC (several different injuries all coded as SW, and one coded as IW).

Why I'm asking - I have been informed by HR at fed job that due to the discharge code in Box 26 of my DD214 and the FPEB line 13 verbiage, my CRSC payments will shut off when I retire from federal government. I don't want to bother with a BCNR appeal if there isn't even a more appropriate SepCode for my specific situaiton (I only have SW/IW injuries - No AC injuries). Sure seems like if there is a code for my situation it would make a huge difference in terms of CRSC eligiblity after FERS retirement, military service buyback, etc. now that I took a fed job.

Thanks in advance everyone.

To my knowledge these codes are not standardized across the DoD and are branch specific... but I happen to be a Marine discharged under similar but different circumstances as you so I can give some circumstantial answers.

SEJ1 makes no mention of combat relation. There are definitely codes that do specify combat relation for things like simulated war, instrumentality of war, etc. and I will attach the related images here. These codes may not apply to you as they specify retirement is not authorized under them, so I would assume a retirement under the permanent list wouldn't allow for the sep code to be anything other than SEJ1. I'm not admin or anything though so I wouldn't know.

What I will tell you is that I was also denied combat relation by the board, and was assigned SEJ1 for said denial and permanent retirement under the PDRL.

You need some form of Excel viewer, Aspose works well for this as a browser viewer, but I'll post the pertinent stuff here:

Above is the direct download to sep codes from wounded warrior.

Above is a free Excel viewer if you do not have Excel.

The posted images are not all of the separation codes of interest, I only attach them to show you what you may be keeping an eye out for. Recommend combing through that and seeing if anything marks your interest as something worth fighting for.

I encourage you to sate your curiosity, but I would recommend fact checking the assertion that you would lose CRSC. If you're confident that the individual that told you this is correct, then maybe it is worth combing through the list and searching for all sep codes containing combat coding. Just from a brief 5 minute view many of them regarding combat do not individually authorize retirement. I would imagine the branch conceding a CRSC amount should be more than enough evidence that they conceded, even if it wasn't yet approved at the time of discharge (as it's impossible to apply before discharging!). Maybe you can present CRSC approval findings to overturn any adverse decision made against you?

I'm just curious about this business - and I certainly am no speaking authority on this. Hopefully the resource gives some well needed answers. Best of luck.

@thanks4urhelp - Thank you for your reply. As I search through that list of sep codes from USMC WWB - I'm not seeing a sep code that even applies to my situation. I see the codes for a medical seperation with combat related injuries incurred via SW / IW --- but not for a PDRL medical retirement - combat-related (SW).

There may not be a code for it: it could be an all encompassing code for those who are put on PDRL.
