so I became a veteran on 30 Jan and uploaded my dd214 on 1 Feb. now the old claim went away and there is a new claim in its place with the status "under review".

How long can I expect this to take? I called the 800-827-1000 and the guy told me the estimated completion date was Jan of 2017!! I know this is not true but if they don't know then I'd appreciate it if they just tell me that instead of just throwing out a ridiculously Far date.

I'm about a month ahead of you. mine switched 19 Jan to a "new claim" with under review. they finalized my claim on 29 Jan. Have to wait for my packet to see what they "think" they need- they left off one of my kids (disabled- over 18) so we will see. I did just recently receive back pay from VA- DFAS messed up transferring numbers, so have to wait for that pay.

It can take anywhere from 3 days to 60 days for the new claim to be finalized. It is essentially the same claim as the IDES.

The good thing about separating on the 30th of January is that your VA effective award date will be February 1st.

This is a normal part of the process and there is nothing to be alarmed about. I have seen some post IDES claims take as much as 60 days to get finalized, but the effective date of decision is always the first of the next month following your release from active duty.

You may need to keep an eye out to ensure that DFAS and the VA gets the DoD offset correct. Your medical retirement should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5000, around $3000 of that (whatever your exact C&P award is) should be listed as tax free income.

You may want to consider filing for unemployment in your state too. Since you did not elect to retire and were med boarded, you should qualify.

Would it be detrimental to file for unemployment while filing for SSDI? I have not filed unemployment for this reason. I didn't want it to hurt my SSDI case

Just for me it took 10 days to get for ebenefits. But if I would apply for unemployment it will mess up your Ssdi trust me.
