OK so im rated 90% VA and 70% AF im currently on TRDL. I just got my CRSC activated last month it adds up to about $100 a month and i did the math and they paid up for back pay since OCT 2012 in MAR 2013. Anyway i get a deposit from dfas today randomly so i began to investigate and it states its Special monthly compansation. So of course now im confused since i thought you could only get SMC if you were declared 100% VA. Any and all help much appreciated im not touching the money till i can verify the funds but we all know this dealing with DFAS or VA accounting. thanks

SMC can be paid for under 100%. For example, if you claimed erectile dysfunction you get SMC K $100 a month. SMC is used as special compensation and there are different rates. If you go to the website an look at the different rates it may help you figure out what you got it for.

Ok i see the differant SMC rates but i cant figure out what its for based on back-pay ill just have to wait for a letter. Also who would pay this SMC is it suppose to come from DFAS since im TDRL or from the VA because the deposit i recieved is from DFAS

Effective 12/1/2012:

SMC K rate is $100 per month. It is usually added to other DoVA rate(s), or paid as the DoVA rate when a DoVA percentage is zero.

SMC is an additional tax-free benefit that can be paid to Veterans, their spouses, surviving spouses and parents.

For Veterans, SMC is a higher rate of compensation paid due to special circumstances such as the need of aid and attendance by another person or by specific disability, such as loss of use of one hand or leg.

For spouses and surviving spouses, SMC benefit is commonly referred to as aid and attendance and is paid based on the need of aid and attendance by another person.

Moreover, the majority of service-connected disabilities are defined by a percentage ranging from 0 to 100 percent to reflect the severity of the condition(s) and the disabling effects they have on the veteran. These percentages are explicitly defined by Federal Regulations under the Schedule for Rating Disabilities and are assigned a monetary compensation award based on the vocational limitations that these injuries or disorders cause and subsequently the effect they may have on monetary earnings.

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

Ok so if I understand this correctly DoVA pays SMC then what I don't get is why DFAS is paying SMC I do receive CRSC from DFAS which I have already started last month I don't understand why DFAS would put a SMC payment to me. so confused thanks though everyone

A call to DFAS tomorrow might be the best course of action. I've been drawing DoD retirement pay since March 1st, and my SMC is not included/paid. However, it (SMC) is listed on my finalized ratings- just waiting on the VA to start paying their part (hopefully May 1st).
