Helpful like for VA process/ratings/etc.

So this might seem like a dumb question but is the vsdr percentage the percentage one can expect from the army when MEBing or is that just for VA after getting discharged? Thanks, Kevin H.

No its just easier for the individual to wade through the guessing process for their ratings. The DoD and VA HAVE to follow the VASRD, but the lingo used is not for dumb guys like me that can't figure that crap out. The EFCR just makes it somewhat easier to understand.

So let me get all this straight...I saw on another thread (and of course I can't remember!) but someone posted something along the lines of basically if you can add all your conditions up to 160% you most likely will get 100% from VA. Does that sound in the least bit right?

In the VASRD, there is a section with a 'Combined Ratings Table'...use that to add your conditions together. That won't take into account the B/L factor, but it'll get you in the ballpark.

EDIT: ADD isn't the right word...COMBINE is more accurate

70+20+20 = 110 (in real life)
VA math 70+20 + 20 = 80% disabled 100% - 70% = 30% - 20%= 19.2
100-19.2 = 80.8 = 80% disabled
Always start with 100 then subtract the largest %'s first. Anything that ends 4.9 rounds to the nearest 10, 5.0 rounds up to the next 10.
Congressional math............

As grizz13 posted above, the bi-lat ratings are something everyone needs to know about and take into account. I know of several soldiers who only claimed one knee or one shoulder, for some reason or another (seemed weird to me). I had to explain to them why they need to claim EVERYTHING, especially bi-lat conditions!!

So I dont get it whats the difference between the Army rating and the VA rating? I am being MED Boarded for Depression and PTSD for the Army..so will the VA rate me for that stuff too and when will i get to incorporate my other injuries like when i tore my ACL and Meniscus and had reconstruction surgery and my right knee and lower back pain, ringing in my ears and headaches? How do they determine what rating you get for these other injuries/ illnesses also?

The Army doesn't rate anything. The Army uses the VA rating(s) and puts them on the Army form. The VA proposed rating letter will have the service connected ratings and the explanations for those not service connected.

I'm about at wits end with the VA. I'm claiming several things: Cronic Fatigue, PTSD, lower back, individual unemployability, bilateral hearing loss, left hip condition, right shoulder dislocation, right ankle, sleep apnea, tinnitus, left ankle, left hand, bilateral knee condition, insomnia secondary to sleep apnea, memory loss, left sholder, TBI... I did my claim January 20th of this year and haven't even been given a C&P. The sad part is I know exactly where my file is and the phone number to the lady that has it. I sent in a hardship around August it got approved, here it is Dec. 1, and still nothing, last week I call NW Florida's House of Rep. for my area. I'm trying to understand why i'm still in the development stage of my claim. The average for a claim to be in the development stage in FL is 180 days. I'm well over that.

I am not trying to bust your chops, but with 18 conditions claimed, I would say you will fall on the high end of the spectrum for time. Also some of the conditions you listed can be very complex.

Are you in the IDES system, or did you get out on the hardship discharge you mentioned? If you are not in IDES, or a MED board, it is going to add to your time. The VA is back logged and the MEB/PEB cases go to the front of the line. Not defending the VA, or trying to take away from your claim.

Yea, I knew it was going to take time. An I do have alot i'm claiming. No i'm not on a board. I think the main thing that bothers me is they haven't even set a date for a C&P. I think they are waiting on two things from private doc's. Is there a web site where I can go and find out what the % is of each thing i'm claiming?

Hello everyone,

my peblo just called me and said that i got a combined rating of 80%. and I am going to see her this friday (7 dec 12) to sign my paperwork.

my questions:
what does combined rating mean? is it DOD and VA combined?
when I get my proposed combined rating, do I get the DOD and VA rating in the same one?
or do I have to wait longer to get the DOD ratings?
my main concern is did I get that magic number(30%) or not.
thanks for your help.

you should find out all your ratings when you meet with your PEBLO

The terms are not interchangable:
- VA combined rating is always higher.
- DoD combined ratings on referred issues are just those findings that you were found "unfitting."

Both DoD and VA uses the "combined findings" math to compute each agency's ratings. I could guess that 80% (worst case) is the VA ratings, but I would call the PEBLO and get a clearification.

Can you have a rating of 20% for unfitting disability and total combined rating of 0%? The unfitting disability is service connected.

If the combined rating you are talking about is the VA rating, and the 0% rating is the DoD, then yes. The VA rates you on all your conditions, the DoD only on the conditions that make you unfit for continued military service. For example, the VA might rate a member 20% for a back issue, but the DoD determines that the back issue does not interfere with continued military service and, as such, assigns a 0% DoD rating. In such a situation, a member will receive severance vs retirement.

Archie,
The referred conditions (DoD - Unfitting) are almost always no greater than the total combined VA rating. Never heard of someone having 20% DoD and 0% combined VA ratings. Just remember this math, DoD% + nonreferred% = Total combined rating.

examples:
20% Unfitting (DoD) back condition + 0% Nonreferred neck = 20% Total combined rating (VA)
20% Unfitting (DoD) back condition + 10% Nonreferred neck = 30% Total combined rating (VA) (28% averaged up) and 20 % DoD

10% Unfitting (DoD) back condition + 20% Nonreferred neck = 30% Total combined rating (VA) (28% averaged up) and 10% DoD

Hope this helps.
