How to tell parents?

Hi I've been in 12 years and I plan on hopefully staying with family until I get settled after I'm on terminal which should be no problem I have options even. I am waiting on IPEB results but I still haven't told my parents or extended family about my conditions or how my surgery failed, meb, need wrist fusion etc. I'm not really expecting any negative feedback from telling them I'm mostly asking tips on how to tell them without them worrying about it that's why I've waited this long. Should I wait until I know for sure? Any ideas on how to keep them from worrying about it are welcome

to be honest just tell them flat out what's going on what the DOD is doing because of what you have been going through. they will be mostly worried about your surgery stuff. just be honest with them that's all they want so they know what you are going through and you have someone to lean on when you need it. I was flat out with my parents and they are grateful the there is a such this as the IDES program. Or you can just wait and tell them when you have all the answers you need but they may be a little upset with you for not keeping them in the loop. they are your parents and want nothing but the best for you. also your parents will worry regardless. there is nothing you can do to avoid that. you could get a million dollars and they will worry about what you are going to do with it will you spend it properly will you save any of it. give a parent any situation about there kid and worry will follow. can you imagine how proud they were of you when you joined but what they did show was the stress and worry of having there baby in combat. so be honest and tell them.

good luck

I waited until the results of my IPEB too. I told them I didn't want them to worry but thought it was time for them to know what was going on.

Best of luck with your results.

Looks like you've just begun the process. Tell them if you wish. You can say something along the lines of... Hey, I've honorably served for 12 years, but the military is really rough on your body and I've recently been put on a medical evaluation board due to (this and that) the process has just begun, I don't know what's going to become of it. I appreciate your support during this time however I have no clue how everything is going to pan out...it's just part of the process. I'm dealing with the issues as they come, if you've got questions..I probably don't have the answers to them, as this whole process is new to me.

If your folks normally are prone to worry you probably can't change their predisposition. But people are usually stronger than we give them credit for being. Best wishes. Mike

Thanks all

Just tell them your situation. Call them this weekend of Skype them so you can have a more personal talk. They will understand and will probably be happy to have you back in their everyday lives.
My family helped me a lot through this process. My wife has 10+ years in nursing so she helped explain stuff to me and went to a few of the briefs with me. I don't brain very well lately so she helped keep my blood pressure down by constant reassurance. My mother is 7000 miles away at a veteran's job fair today passing out my resumes and getting me contact information. Both sides of the family were understanding (it took some time for the Senior Master Chief Father in Law). I have my mother in Charlotte NC looking for homes, jobs and schools for me, my wife's brother looking for the same on the east coast of NC and a apartment in WVA in my in laws house. I'm glad we reached out to them. We were self sufficient before we joined but we definitely need their help getting restarted.

Thanks again guys i feel much better. I am getting excited something seems to have finally happened on EBenefits, another claim opened up says "preparation for decision"

@dals

Sounds like you are getting close, wishing you the best. Mike
