Hello all,

Currently Active Duty, 12-year E-6 planning for possible future options/outcomes to secure retirement.

Is it possible to join the reserves or guard after being medically retired in AD?

When transitioning from AD to reserves/guard, if you are pursuing a high amount of VA disability claims does that affect your ability to be "healthy" enough for the reserves or guard?

Has anyone been turned away from reserves or guard?

Thank you all for any information, it is truly appreciated!

If you are medically retired, you have been found unfit for service. At least in the Army, unfit for service is the same for AD and Reserve components. You can not be an active drilling soldier (Selected Reserve curorgs) while also being in a retired status.

Army Perspective: You can separate from service under a voluntary or involuntary status (think 2x non-select or force reduction) and request to go into a reserve component. Each separation type comes with their own forms of waivers or approval levels. You can also draw 100% VA disability and be an active reserve Soldier, you just can’t be paid by both entities at the same time. Now if any of your VA ratings come from an unfit condition, that can inhibit joining the reserve or initiate an MEB if already in the reserves.

Again, all compos for the Army have the same medical standards to join. Approvals and waivers may have a different process.

Your best bet is to speak with a NG/Reserve recruiter and go over your options. There are ways, but I'm not positive what they are.

Your RE code on the DD-214 will be such that it means you were separated for disability. At that point, no good recruiter would even attempt to try and bring you in. To enlist you would mean that they would need a waiver, yes the recruiter could submit a waiver but it would never get approved. MEPS would medically disqualify you and the waiver process would have to run its course. while it is theoretically possible to get an RE code / medical waiver approved, it is damn near impossible…. I say all of this as a former Army USAREC company commander who has seen hundreds of waivers, now that was years ago and Regs can change… but I’m telling you it will be all but impossible to get such waivers approved.
