On May 17, 2024, I medically retired from the US Navy after 10 years of service due to various issues. In February 2025, the VA opened a claim to conduct an RFE for my PTSD. The results of that RFE were an increase in my disability from 70% to 100%. However, the VA made my effective date May 1, 2025. Hoping to get some advice, information, or overall guidance on whether the effective date should be appealed? I was within my one-year of separation window, and from what I was told, any increases would be backdated to May 17, 2024.

Same thing happened to my wife. But the backdating is for % NOT for P&T. At the time you got you you were not P&T because that one condition wasn't static. The date they did the RFE and reviewed your condition and determined your condition is now static is the correct way to do it.

So there is nothing to appeal or fix. The VA does that for everyone the same way. P&T date is when all conditions that are used to get you to 100% become static. In your case that happened at the time of your RFE. The only downside is that you have 10 years for DIC instead of 5 for covering your spouse but that's just the way it goes. The VA didn't mess up or do anything wrong.

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate the insight!

Should I expect any retroactive payments due to the rating increase? Every agent I have contacted about this has been unable to answer those questions. I do not want to forgo or miss any benefits that may apply with this change.

It would be from the RFE date and its in the arrears. So it can take time to get the increase.
