INITIAL VA APPOINTMENT

Hello all, I am almost done with AD and I have an appointment with the VA 2 weeks after. My question is what happens at the initial appointment I stopped taking my meds except the Seroquel for sleep because I still can't sleep. With the other meds however I feel like they did more harm than good so I stopped taking them. Will this present itself as a problem at my initial appointment or not? Like bit ore info: I was diagnosed with schizophreniform disorder and then schizophrenia, later in the process however after my med board came back my Dr said she may have made a mistake and that she actually thinks I have major depression with psychotic features. I was rated 70/70 after I did a reconsideration and placed on TDRL.

I am schizophrenic and I stopped taking my meds right before I got out. I didn't believe I was sick then. I made it four days and on the 5th day my wife said either I can take you to the hospital or they are coming to get you.

I had the worst psychotic break I had ever had. Full blown visual hallucinations and suicidal ideation.

I was taking the lowest dose of antipsychotics you can take. Now I am maxed out on one and take a second one also.

Moral of the story is take your meds. With each psychotic break the psychosis gets worse. At least I know I am sick now and I need my meds.

Maybe you will be lucky though. Good luck

You should not stop taking your medication; likewise you should not ask to be off your medication unless you are ready to be evaluated while not being on meds.

From the Schedule of Ratings for Mental Disorders the 10% criteria says:

symptoms controlled by continuous medication

If you are not taking your prescribed medication, you run the risk of them saying "Well you aren't taking your meds, so we don't know if your symptoms are controllable or not"

At your appointment they are going to ask you what meds you are taking. If you lie and say you are taking all of them, you will hem yourself up for lying. If you tell the truth and say you stopped taking them, then you went AMA (Against Medical Advice) and aren't taking your meds thus exasperating your own condition.

I also agree very much so with THolleyH46. There have been several times I wanted to be off my meds. I hate how they make me feel like a zombie. I hate that I've gained 50 lbs since I started taking them. I dislike greatly being in my 30s and having 6 different pill bottles on my headboard. The few times I thought I could just stop taking them, my wife told me go back on your meds or I'm leaving with the kids.

So at my appointment could I just say I stopped taking them however I feel I need to go back on them and have them prescribe me meds then and there.
