IPEB - Medical Retirement vs Medical Separation

Starting the MEB process at just over 13 years due to a referral based on Celiac disease and, soon, a formal diagnosis for frequent/chronic migraines.

I am trying to prepare myself for what is next after having served and planned to serve to 20. I am already INDEF with the Army but am planning to be separated.

How does the board make a determination to separate vs. medically retire a service member and, is there anything my command or I can do to help push for a retirement?

Really depressed with the whole situation as thought I had 7 years left...

Thanks in advance.

If your DOD findings are 30% or higher you will be medically retired and placed on either the TDRL or PDRL. Anything below 30% and you will be medically separated.

over 30% tricare for life for you and your family and a cool certification say you are retired from the Army. however, dod under 30% but with va 100% still let va cover you from head to toes. Both give you big chunk of severance pay. Now your waiting game is just about to begin. have fun! make sure utilize Skill Bridge while in Meb and apply for VR&E to help either jobs or school (IDES makes you pre-qualified for VR&E).

I'll be posting a timeline once I have a little more to report, but sounds like I'm in a similar situation as you with referral for celiac. If you don't mind sharing, how is your process going?

Hey flounder, it's going. I am just in the hurry up and wait PEB phase. Here is my timeline so far:

12/13/24: PA refer to MEB
2/11/25: MEB start & PEBLO intake
2/18: First C&P Exams
3/12: Last C&P Exams
3/25: Received NARSUM
3/28: Submitted NARSUM after review with OSC/JAG
??? PEB phase started??? No idea what is next. Was told to wait by my PEBLO.

My PEBLO mentioned the VA being backed up with cases due to cuts and such... so, expecting it to drag out but not looking forward to that.

You're a few months ahead of me. I won't have my PEBLO brief until later this month due to various delays. Despite the VA turmoil, I hope things go as smooth as possible for you and you get an answer sooner than later. Waiting is definitely the worst....

Hey flounder, got an update. they rated me at 0% for celiac because of lack of "malabsorption syndrome" in my workup. My diagnosis was wonky while overseas and I didn't have vitamin/iron bloodwork done until after being GF so I think that is screwing me. Either way, I'm taking the severance pay as it is significant and saying good bye. I did get 100% VA so if I understand everything correctly, I'll keep the entire severance package and start collecting 100% VA disability at separation.

I was wondering how your case went. That is a bummer they rated it 0%... I hadn't even considered that a possibility. Awesome about the 100% VA and keeping all the severance though. I feel you on cutting your loses and moving on.

Yea, it's all good. The severance will be taxed, unfortunately, but it's still a cushion. How is your case progressing?

I started C&P exams on 5/7 and last is scheduled 5/27. Then more waiting, I guess. Trying to see if I can squeeze a local CSP in after exams are done to kill some time. Do you have an out date yet?
